Kiss in the rain

How long had it been now? A month? Two months? Maybe even three? The matter of how much time had past was irrelevant, he still felt the same. Everyone did. It wasn’t just him. Everyone was still feeling the effects of war. The war may have been over but it’s terrifying fingers still traced around the necks of those involved and slowly strangled the life out of them, strangling what was left of their humanity, their ability to be and function humanly out of them. Sakuro could see just from walking around the village, his friends his acquaintances, the people he knew, most if not all of them just didn’t smile the same anymore.

Sakuro felt he had no right to complain. How could he comp;lain when there were people like Hinata close to him? She had lost her dear cousin. People had lost fathers and mothers, sister and brothers, aunties and uncles. So Sakuro shouldn’t complain. He should simply grit and bear it. Put on the best smile he could and get on with his life. He needed to be strong, strong enough to support himself and strong enough to support others.

And Sakuro as pretty good at it; pretending to be alright. But some rights, some cold and lonely nights he was haunted with what he saw. The people writhing in pain, screaming in agony, the bodies mangled and deformed, begging for him to either help them or kill them. And sometimes he could help them, but there were times where their injuries were just too much. He lost count of how many people he watched slowly fade away, how many people’s lives he let fade away into nothingness. And he couldn’t forget their faces; their voices. And he blamed himself.

On nights like these being confined in his room was too much, the walls felt like they were closing in on him and he had to get out. So he’d leave, take a walk around the village and try to clam himself down. He’d wander the empty streets devoid of light, and sit alone on benches, staring at the stars.

Tonight was one of those nights. He couldn’t sleep. He couldn’t shut his eyes or he’d see all those people. So he left, he fled out his bedroom window and escaped to the streets. It was raining but he didn’t care. He needed to get out and he couldn’t feel the rain. He had been out for a little over an hour now, it was past two at this point and there was no one around. So like usual Sakuro sat on a bench alone and tried to pure his thoughts from the dark places they were venturing.

That was when he heard footsteps, he jumped in surprise and turned to see who would be out this late at night. It was the first time he had come across anyone out this late. When he saw who it was his eyes widened in shock, only momentarily before he relaxed, slumping back into the bench a little more and breathing a small, silent sigh of relief.

‘ Naruto, what are you doing out here so late ?’

His whisker faced friend had a stern look, it was unwavering even after his question, making Sakuro quirk a brow. Was he mad about something? No it didn’t seem that kind of stern. He looked almost upset. Immediately Sakuro felt something sink in his gut, he wasn’t sure as to why yet, but some sort of bad feeling came over him. And as Naruto approached it only got worse. He felt himself panicking. Naruto sat down next to him and it seemed like he was avoiding looking at him directly.

‘ Sakuro why are you out here ?’

Sakuro swallowed a lump in his throat, glancing off to the side like he always did when he lied.

‘ Oh you know, couldn’t sleep and stuff.. So I thought I’d go for a walk to help me sleep..’

‘ In the rain ?’

Sakuro’s eyes widened at the sharpness of Naruto’s question, his eyes snapped back to the blond and he felt like he had to go on the defensive, like he was being cornered.

‘ S—- So what ? What’s wrong with that ?’

‘ Nothing if you’re telling the truth. But you’re not are you Sakuro ?’

He couldn’t speak, he couldn’t think or form any words. He’d been caught so off guard by all of this that he didn’t know how to react.

‘ Everyone’s struggles Sakuro. Some people make it obvious. You might have fooled the others… but did you really think you could hide it from me ? Did you really think I wouldn’t notice ? I wouldn’t notice that you been avoiding me; everyone ? You don’t act the same anymore.’

Sakuro felt his lip tremble and he didn’t know if he was about to cry or about to lose it.

‘ What are you talking about Naruto… I’m fine. I’m normal. You’re just overthinkin—’

‘ Sakuro. Stop. Stop lying. Stop shouldering everything by yourself. I’m your friend aren’t I ? Lean on me. Tell me when you’re upset or struggling.’

‘ I’m—- I’m not upset. I’m not struggling ! You don’t know what you’re talking about Naruto. Mind your own business. I’m fine. I’m completely fine !’

‘ Why are you so afraid of telling me Sakuro ? Why can’t you just admit it ? Don’t you trust me ? Just talk to me… Please…’

Sakuro felt himself physically shaken, his breath was becoming more rapid, and for the first time he felt the chill of the rain. And he felt the heat of it rolling down his cheeks. Or perhaps that heat were tears. Perhaps he was crying. At this point he couldn’t tell.

‘ I– I… Naruto… I just—- I-I…’

‘ You’re not weak for feeling Sakuro. You’re human. You can let me help you. I’m here for you.’

Naruto had turn to face him now, for the first time during all of this, his stern look had changed into a painful look, he really looked like he was in pain. And now Sakuro was sure he was crying; he was sobbing. No one had noticed his pain. He’d held it all alone like a weight slowly crushing him. And he sobbed. He hung his head and sobbed.

Sakuro felt warmth wrap around him, he wasn’t sure what it was at first but it felt oh so comforting, like he had felt warmth for the first time. Naruto lifted the other’s face to face his own, and Sakuro still sobbed.

And slowly, there in the rain, Naruto closed the distance between the two, their lips interlocking in a warm and sweet kiss; a comforting kiss.
