Thoughts on the ring and the centipede:
Ok, so I know that everyone is concerned about the centipede and the symbolism behind it, but I don’t really think it’s a big a deal as some are making it out to be. I’m not saying I expect everything to be roses from here on out, not at all, but I don’t think that there’s much of a reason to get overly concerned about the centipede showing up.
Look at where the panel of the centipede was placed. It was placed after Kaneki was saying that everyone was waiting for them, and if you notice, the preview of the next chapter is talking about Goat making their move.
Basically, these last two chapters, covering all the time Touka and Kaneki have spent together, have been a reprieve for the two of them. They went from getting cornered and escaping to finding love with each other, and spent the whole night sharing that with each other. After that, they went to Yoriko’s wedding. All of that was a break for them, where they could ignore the problems they were facing.
I think that the placement of the centipede there wasn’t any kind of death flag, but more of a symbol that their reprieve is over for now. The members of Goat don’t see Kaneki like Touka does. Most of them see Kaneki as Mukade (Centipede), slayer of the CCG’s reaper. That’s why they follow him. So the placement of the centipede there is a way to say that they’re returning to business, that he will have to return to being the OEK for a while.
As for the ring, I also don’t think that it was a death flag for Touka. I do think something bad could happen to Touka, or something bad could come close to happening, and I think that it might cause Kaneki to lose himself a bit. Remember, we still haven’t seen Kaneki in a full Kakuja, and we already know how hard it is for Kaneki (and others) to control themselves while in Kakuja.
Basically I think whatever happens (or almost happens) to Touka will cause Kaneki to run wild as a Kakuja, and the ring, or Touka, will help him return to normal state. Touka is his reason to live, and is the source of so much happiness for Kaneki (as we saw in this and the last chapter). I think that she’s basically his light.
Another reason I don’t think she’ll die is that if she did, I don’t think there would be as great a resolution for her story, Kaneki’s story, and the story at large. If Touka were to die, it would basically be setting up the same circumstances that her parents went through. I mean, Kaneki could still change the future for ghouls, but I don’t think it would have much of an impact on him if she wasn’t there with him. It would dilute the meaning of the accomplishment, and I think that Kaneki would fall back into where he was without her, maybe even more so because he had experienced love, actual love, with her.
So despite the nature of TG, I feel pretty ok about Touka’s status, and I don’t think either Touka giving the ring to Kaneki or the centipede were that big a deal.
