THE ENTIRE HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON FRANCHISE
Why do you think aromanticism could save them?: āThe franchise starts introducing dragons and humans rivalry but slowly explores the conflict, as they reveal the Big Bad of movie 1 (which if you don't remember is the cruel dragon who rules with an iron fist and forces the dragon to steal stuff or else they will get killed) and through the power of working together they defeat them. allowing them to live in peace. Then the second movie explores the whole "Dragons and Humans" relationship, by having a big bad human and a big bad dragon working together and imposing fear through hate and mind-controlling, still getting overpowered by working together and close bonds.
AND THEN SOMEONE IN DREAMWORK WENT "DUDE WE SHOULD MAKE THE NEXT MOVIE ROMANCE-THEMED!! LET'S GIVE TOOTHLESS A ROMANTIC PARTNER, LET'S MAKE A LOVE TRIANGLE AND MAKE EVERYONE'S FOCUS THE FACT THAT HICCUP AND ASTRIC ARE NOT MARRIED YET DESPITE HE IS NOW A KING, HAS A DEAD DAD AND HE IS WORKING TO SAVE THE DRAGONS WHO ARE STILL GETTING KIDNAPPED AND ABUSED. OH, LET'S END THIS MOVIE WITH EVERYONE HAVING BABIES AND GETTING SEPARATED."
1) They basically say on-screen "Sorry if Toothless is weird, he is just hit by puberty and is driven by hormones"
2) Also this lead to a weird ahh ableist thing (I think it's ableist, sorry if it's me looking too deep) which is basically "Fixing Toothless forever so he can be free", but not because he wants to, or for something, like "He is in danger and if Hiccup isn't there he is f up". They even said that they asked that in the past, but he didn't want to.
But now he has to because he wants the girl but if he goes to the girl with Hiccup she will kill him, because let's remember (I am not joking) "She is a reminder that dragons will be distrustful of humans no matter what" which makes sense on his own I like the idea, it's realistic.
But the little personality we have of her which isn't the "Pretty girl Toothless gets to chase and falls in love with" is how the big bad of movie 3 kidnapped her and then let her go so she can meet the Alpha (Toothless) and lead him to the baddie.
Which it's. Well. Not good.
3) They reduce the rest of the Dragonriders to comedic ridiculous guys even more going movie to movie and here they half-cook a weird love triangle between Fishlegs, Snoutlout, and Ruffnut. And make Tuffnut a sort of cringe-nae-nae guy who attempts to wingman Hiccup.
My guys Dragonriders deserved better. You could make awesome things with their chaoticness and you made a fucking love triangle. Give me my found family of weirdos besties back or make 'em poly it'd be funnier.
4) Instead of using Valka, Hiccup's mother who lived her entire life hidden by the kingdom raising dragons and keeping them safe, and giving her screen time, they focused on Astrid and Hiccup and only Astrid and Hiccup.
5) The movie ends with the dragons moving into the Hidden World where they can live in peace and get forgotten (which it's kinda fair, but I still think they could do a better ending), except that after marriage and childing Hiccup and Astrid take their kids (Which are the most boring and lame child design I saw in this decade) to the hidden world and guess F---ING what? Toothless. Doesn't. Remember/Recognize. Hiccup. At. First.
I could live with this and write/read fix-fic about it but this is just rubbing salt in the wounds.ā
