Is it just me, or did the set design in science fiction and fantasy movies used to be a lot more… epic? I mean, look at this:

Each of these has texture and weight and presence; they have created huge and impressive landscapes for their characters to inhabit. Each gave me a certain feeling when I first saw them, a kind of mix of excitement and tension that I think must be awe. Too many modern movies just seem like a cgi smear.
