An excerpt from We Both Laughed In Pleasure

I've been trying to play around more when it comes to art again. I feel like all of my creativity has been fried out of me due to my endless social media scrolling. I know it's never to late, but I've been feeling behind. Making this little video made me feel better.
"'I am an object in the room', she had told herself. 'That is all that I am.' This belief spared her the agony of her own intelligence" -Lapvona
"When she asked the birds what to do, they answered that they didn't know anything about love, that love was a distinctly human defect which God had created to counterbalance the power of human greed" - Lapvona
Lapvona
About halfway through the book, I stopped looking for a point to the story and accepted that I was simply watching people . People doing bad, weird, gross things. There didn't seem to be any grand theme other than âlife is full of sufferingâ and âpeople suckâ. When good or bad things happened to people, it never felt earned, just something that happened to them.
That's not to say I didn't enjoy the book. It was an interesting snapshot into the lives and minds of the people of the medieval town Lapvona. I always wanted to know what happened next and the voyeurism almost made me feel almost as grimy as the characters, but I never got quite close enough to care that much about any of them. I mean it was hard to, considering most of the characters were hard to like despite their struggles.Â
If this book was trying to say something profound, I think I missed it. My annotations lacked much substance because most of my reactions amounted to âoh, thatâs interestingâ whenever a line stood out. I didnât find any of the charactersâ philosophies especially productive to sit with beyond the idea that this is how people respond to cultural trauma. Every character wanted to be good but failed to reach it. As readers, we can often see where the answer lies, yet we watch the characters search everywhere except the right place.
Today most people live on the level of the self and not the level of the soul, which is the costume of personality over the soul. That's what the self is. - Maria Popova
