lena wouldn't - couldn't - cry, but she did feel the slightest prick of tears in her eyes at the words. she was very glad that kolby was turned away from her - not because she didn't feel safe to cry, but because she really didn't want to. not right now, at least. and whatever was happening on her face, walls cracked and paint peeling, it would just give her away. still, her arms tightened around the woman's waist and she breathed her in, the scent and the feel of her in lena's arms. and it was quiet for a moment, before she uttered a quiet 'thank you,' almost beneath her breath.

it was quiet as they both came down from the kiss. lena's hand moved from kolby's waist to the back of her head, before she leaned forward to press a quiet affectionate kiss to her forehead. and then kolby's voice rose above the noise in her head, the want, and lena quietly breathed in the scent of her hair, let it soothe her and ground her. a furrow had formed in lena's brow at the hint of insecurity in kolby's voice to lena's own feelings and the artist let out a quiet sigh. her scarred hand had slipped down from the back of kolby's head to her neck, where she gently kneaded the stress out of the muscle there.

lena let kolby ramble for a bit, before she cut in gently, a smile coming to her features, lightening her eyes as kolby admitted that she needed to incessantly be in contact with lena. the feelings were definitely shared. "do you remember what i said at the event?" she remembered it clearly, watching kolby move, watching her speak, watching the way her eyes were so expressive. and she remembered all the things she said - and all the things she hadn't yet. "you mentioned how i might regret getting to know you," a ludicrous suggestion that lena had brushed off immediately as it came. "and i said that i wouldn't; that i wouldn't take back anything i'd said that night." leaning back slightly until she could meet kolby's eyes, which were such a bright, startling blue that lena had to stare for a moment. "i still stand by that," nodding, solid and sure of herself as she was, she did not allow a moment for kolby to feel like she wasn't enough. if anything, it was lena who was far too much and not enough at the same time.

"i don't regret a single moment of time i've spent with you. and i don't regret saying what i said that night." her eyes had darkened, and a quiet surge of want hit her then. "not when we were kissing," her voice lowered, "not when you took your clothes off," reaching up to brush a strand of hair behind kolby's ear, her touch lingered on her cheek and the next words were a match on already spilled gasoline. "and not when i was inside of you." she could remember how kolby had felt distinctly; as if they were still stuck in that fragile expanse of time. held between time and space; lena had found her happiness there. how warm, how she fluttered around lena, how she clenched, how wet she was, and then, gradually, what she tasted like...

as their bodies pressed together, kolby couldn't help but let out a small sigh of relief. lena's arms felt like home. so comforting. so warm. she felt safe, protected and like she belonged. she had a special way of reassuring kolby. it didn't take much. a soft touch, a particular look, a glint in her eye, or a perfectly chosen string of words. whatever the moment called for, lena always seemed to know exactly how to ground her, to ease the doubt or anxiety before it could take over completely. she knew exactly what kolby needed which was shocking considering they still had so much to learn about each other. or maybe they didn't. maybe they'd been made just for each other in every lifetime. she softened under her touch as lena massaged the back of her neck, making no effort to stop the small moan that slipped past her lips at how good it felt. "i believe you. i really, really do.." she murmured, her voice trailing off. and then, in true kolby fashion, came the quiet confession of self doubt. "but isn't it crazy to feel this way? after just one night? to want nothing more than to give myself to you completely before you truly get to know me? i know i can be a lot, clingy even. overbearing maybe. but what if i show you all of that and you decide that's not really for you?" she didn't say it aloud, but kolby thought she would die if lena ever did come to that conclusion.

she was grateful when lena chimed in. her scrambled thoughts came to a halt, the noise in her head quieting almost instantly. she never thought she needed much validation. not this much anyway. but then again, she'd never felt quite like this before. she used to think she'd experienced every possible emotion before lena, but she'd been wrong. because even the familiar ones felt different now. they were deeper, sharper, more real. her features softened, and the smile she always seemed to wear around lena returned at her words. and then a beat later, the smile turned into a cocky grin. "not when you were inside me?" she replied, pressing into lena. and just like that, she was distracted. thinking back on how good that felt. to have lena inside her. and how she so badly needed her again. "if you keep sweet talking me like that," she cooed, "i'm afraid i'm gonna need you inside me again. immediately." nothing had ever felt so good. no one had ever made her feel so good. kolby would crave lena's touch for the rest of her days, of that she was sure.

"so i'm still yours then? in the light of day and under different circumstances?" she must've given herself to lena a million times that night. the 'i'm yours. i'm yours.' still echoed in the back of her mind. she all but melted at lena's words, her eyes glossing over from the sheer pureness of them. "where have you been all my life?" a question kolby hadn't stopped asking herself since the festival. because colors were brighter now. the sun seemed warmer. songs she'd heard a hundred times before had new meaning with lena in the picture. she'd been waiting for her without even knowing it. "and now i can't imagine a world in which i'm claimed by anyone else." her words were spoken softly but without hesitation. a pause. and then even quieter but just as sure, "you're everything, lena."

lena enjoyed a challenge - which was why most of the more difficult clients landed on her desk. this need to be right, to please and to be better than anyone else, often brought with it hovering attention over her own work. she found that it was nearly impossible for her to put something down when she'd started. drafting new outlines for the home itself, protractor and trace pen in hand, she didn't startle and mess up her line work when their was a knock on the door, nor did she immediately look up. not even when kolby stepped through the door, though her pen hovered, unsure suddenly, in her hand before it touched back down onto the trace paper. "i'm outlining a kitchen," she explained, finishing the line work she was doing before dropping the pen and glancing up.

a pause, a near stutter in her attention at the change of hair color, so unlike the red that kolby had worn before, took lena by surprise. but it was not unwelcome. she rose from her seat smoothly, desk chair not making a sound as she moved around the desk to her lover. reaching for her hands, lena took a seat on the edge of the desk, their height difference not making itself quite as known as it usually did now that she was sitting down. "this is new," she spoke quietly, intimately between them, her eyes taking in the expressive way that kolby's blue were. reaching upwards, she caught a strand of blonde between her fingertips and smiled. "you look beautiful; it makes your eyes..." carrying off, shaking her head, she really liked the change. "do you like it?"

she reached across kolby's shoulder to catch the door that was ajar to her office, pushing it closed so they were shadowed in privacy. then, in a single motion, she leaned down to press a soft kiss to her cheek. "i like a cappuccino, actually, with a little bit of sugar. but when i drink tea," and her mouth continued downwards until she found the prominent jawline of her lover, where she gently bit down playfully before pulling away with a smirk. "when i drink tea i like camomile or chai." pulling kolby gently into her body, her arms fell around the woman and she rest her head on kolby's shoulder. "i missed you."

she was patient as she walked in on lena mid-project. taking advantage of the moment to watch her carefully. lena looked beautiful as ever, completely focused on her task at hand. so peaceful, so sure of herself as she worked away. something about seeing her in her element was just so damn attractive, and for a brief moment, kolby hated herself for pulling her away. her eyes softened, as they did whenever she saw her, and a smile graced her lips, only growing wider once their eyes met.

as lena made her way around her desk, kolby couldn't help but stare, taking in the full sight of her. she stepped closer, eventually settling between her legs as she lena reached for her hands. "it is new." blue eyes darted down to their hands and lingered there for a moment. because if lena hated it, kolby didn't want to see that written across her face. her shoulders dropped slightly when the compliment came, giving the blonde enough courage to meet lena's gaze again. "i do! i mean.. it's gonna take some getting used to but i was getting a little tired of the red and the upkeep. thought it was time for a change. unless you like the red more?" because if she did, kolby would hightail it straight back to the salon.

the thought of heading back to the coffee shop to get lena something she'd prefer dissipated just as quickly as it came the second her lips touched her skin. to be fair, every thought apart from how enamoured she was seemed to vanish too. kolby leaned in closer, arms wrapping around her neck with a soft purr at lena's bite. "cappuccino, chamomile or chai. noted." she repeated, lifting a hand to trail up lena's neck and tangle in her hair. "i missed you. i always miss you." and for once her vulnerability didn't scare her. kolby pressed a kiss to her cheek before drawing her hand around to brush her thumb across it. "i don't want to bother you while you're at work and deprive someone of their brand new kitchen, though."

she’d just left the salon. gone was the signature red hair that had framed her face for years, fun and bold. in its place, a cool, unfamiliar shade of blonde that caught the light differently, made her reflection feel slightly off. it had felt like a good idea. something new, something fresh. something she'd been wanting to do for far too long. but now, as she stood on the threshold of lena’s world, she wasn’t so sure. as kolby walked into lena’s architecture firm, a familiar anxiety stirred low in her stomach, creeping upward like a slow tide. the new surroundings and the new faces definitely didn't help. she probably should've texted her first. sent a picture. called. anything but showing up unannounced.

as lena reached for her hand, kolby's fingers curled around hers, offering it a gentle squeeze. it was one of reassurance, that she was safe with her, an unspoken promise that she was there and wouldn't leave. the kind of touch meant to steady, not fix. because despite what she'd been told or taught, lena didn't need fixing at all, she just needed to be heard and perhaps have her feelings validated for once. it was clear it pained lena to rehash those memories, her eyes didn't lie. kolby could tell by the tone of her voice that she'd probably never even spoken those words out loud before. like she'd never allowed herself to truly feel angry or sad about the cards she'd been dealt. but she could now, because kolby would listen. without judgement. always. and she gave her the occasional nod or small smile to make sure lena knew that. she listened in silence, her heart aching for lena with every word she spoke, and for her mother, a little, too. but mostly for lena, and how she talked about her as if she were mourning someone who was very much still alive.

"i can't pretend to understand everything your mother's been through. but no matter how hard it was for her, it doesn't excuse the way she treated you. her wounds aren't yours to fix, just like her baggage isn't yours to carry."

she ran her hand up and down lena's forearm as lena tightened her grip, head leaning back against one of her shoulders. "everyone's family is a little fucked up, no?" she chuckled, hoping to lighten the mood. she wanted more than anything for lena to feel comfortable with her. to let her guard down and feel the emotions she'd spent far too many years pushing away. "i wanna hear all of it. or however much you wanna tell me. i wanna know you. not just the person you show the world. i wanna know the one you've felt the need to hide. because you don't have to hide her from me." and to say kolby was already head over heels for lena wouldn't be wrong. the constant need to be around her, to touch her. the desire to be there for her, to help her heal along the way, was unmatched. "i promise to take good care of it" she replied softly "and return it once i'm done."

lena returning the kiss was the quiet confirmation kolby had been looking, hoping, for. it was dizzying in the best way, stirring up the same feeling she'd had just nights before. her wanting hands felt just as good now, and the slight whimper into the kiss surely gave that away. she leaned into the kiss, leaned into lena, as their tongues met, and kolby thought she could do this forever and never get tired of it. when lena finally pulled back, kolby didn't immediately open her eyes. she licked her lips, then gently tugged her bottom one between her teeth, like she could somehow hold on to the taste of lena just a little longer. "no, please don't ever apologize for doing that. like, ever.." her voice wavered slightly, her chest rising and falling rapidly, caught in the aftermath. "i only intended it to be innocent because i wasn't entirely sure it'd be okay? i just.. things were said the other night. and i totally get it if it was an in the heat of the moment kind of thing. y'know, no pressure!" kolby knew she was rambling, she could feel it in the way her words tripped over themselves, the flutter in her chest from the kiss still very present. "i- you said you wanted to ruin me, and in that moment i didn't think much other beyond how hot that was. i might not have even completely registered it. but now i feel like i'm going crazy 'cause i have this incessant need to be around you, and touch you, and kiss you. like nothing or no one else could do the trick." lena had succeeded. kolby was in fact ruined for anyone who would come after.

mari blinked, stuck in a moment too heavy to name as she heard the words 'proud of you.' when was the last time anyone had said something like that to her? slowly, a radiant smile built up on her face until her cheeks practically hurt from it. she could feel a surge of affection for kamie then, new and exciting, but she buried it beneath the thought that nothing could ever happen between them besides, maybe, friendship. "thank you," and her voice, softer and more intimate, couldn't be helped because, even if it had been said in passing, it meant something to her to hear it. and she let herself settle into the urge to nudge kamie back before, a soft press of her hand to kamie's shoulder before she pulled back. the grin was still there, though it had dimmed in brightness as kamie spoke.

"there's a couple of sporting goods supply stores on the island; you could always buy a new one." always the optimist, mari wouldn't let kamie rest in the regret for long. "i like the beach," a tilt of her head, she thought of mornings spent down swimming or meditating, and found herself nodding. "especially ridiculously early in the morning when you can watch the sunset; i like to meditate down there. and then again, at night when it's just you and the water. i never swim at night, but its relaxing to hear the water." and there was even less of a chance that someone would come looking for her or spot her down there.

nodding off the appreciation, mari waffled in uncertainty of what to do with her hands for a moment before they found the pockets of her denim cutoff shorts. they were shorter than was probably appropriate for chatting, something she wore around the house alone, but she had not been expecting kameryn and her appearance into mari's life. her t-shirt was one that displayed a band - mazzy star, one of mari's favorites - and she was dressed down, comfortable, the t-shirt spilling nearly passed the shorts that she wore.
