For those who asked what Soft Cell ever did besides Tainted Love, here is your answer: They made the greatest breakup song ever written.
It has the most biting, sneering yet lovelorn lyrics and Marc Almond’s voice conveys both contempt and heartache so perfectly pitched, it could tear you apart. When he says “We’re strangers meeting for the first time, ok?” you can just feel the sense of loss mingled with hesitancy. Giving up something you know isn’t good for you isn’t easy. This song is a tribute to all the heartbreak that comes with that. It’s brilliantly composed, perfectly sung and in my top ten list of favorite songs of all time.
