I wanted to share some photos of this beautiful hand-bound copy of The sound of an omen from the center of a hurricane that @hydok gifted me!!
There are so many details I love about the design, such as the little key charm on the bookmark, the combination of red, blue, and black that matches the themes of aoex and the symbols/circles on the beginning of each chapter. The various fonts fit the tone and setting of the fic in such a deliberate, thoughtful way.
@hydok I don't have enough words to tell you how much it means to me! You are so talented, and I can only imagine how much work it took creating this. Thank you so much! I'm so incredibly fortunate and honored to receive your binding of my fic!!! T^ T
The whole bind was such a fun project! I'm so happy with how the chapter pages and TOC came out with the "stacks of paper" look as a nod to the idea of a case fic where there are lots of notes being taken and used. I also really wanted to lean into the whole vibe of the True Cross colors (despite how that black bookcloth just really wants to pick up every bit of lint and smudge of glue) to underscore the way the fic is set in a future where the twins are adults who have (in their own ways) settled into the official roles of exorcists.
The fic is one of my favorites in the fandom, and I found myself distracted by reading it again when I was supposed to be focusing on the typesetting, I kept getting too into the story and your beautiful writing and realizing like three paragraphs later that I was supposed to be hunting down weird line breaks or hyphenations or something technical and typesetting-related.
Aww that's so cool! It's super neat to hear about your inspiration for the design! o(≧∀≦)o I really loved the way the pages looked too!! I've always really liked books that had the slightly rough edges, and the way yours turned out was super cool looking too!! Also, when I opened up the book, I thought the black was so neat because it matched the color of their exorcist coats!! *O * (haha it feels really endearing to me that the book cover likes to pick up lint now :) Also, I'm so happy you noticed the different time formats for when the chapter POV switched! At first, I was going to make it all in military time, but I felt like RIn wouldn't be the type to use military time, so I switched his :D

“Are you almost done?” Rin asks, perhaps for the tenth time this particular morning.
Yukio takes his glasses off and rubs his eyes. A warm breeze wafts in from the window with the faint sweetness of cherry blossoms. Somehow, the bitter scent of herbs and wooden furniture in the pharmaceutics office remains the same as when their father used it. It always makes him think of the monastery.
“I want to eat lunch.” Rin’s chair squeaks when he leans it back on the hind legs. “Come on. You said you’d be done if I helped with the quiz, right? Let’s take a break.”
“Yeah, but I need to adjust a few of your questions,” Yukio says. “You did a good job.”
Rin tilts his chair forward. “It’s because I’m a real exorcist now.”
A smile tugs at Yukio’s lips. “That’s true, but some of your multiple choice options are just unrealistic. Call Mephisto? I’ve only ever left Sir Pheles voice mails.”
“You’re going to make them harder?” Rin heaves out a long-suffering sigh. “It’s good enough. What do you want for lunch?”
Before Yukio can answer, Rin’s chair tips backward.
“Whoa!” Rin grabs onto a shelf, knocks it over and crashes to the floor. “Ow,” he huffs. “That really hurt.”
“Nii-san…” Yukio grimaces when a plume of dust rises. He should clean the tops of the shelves better. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m okay.”
“Be careful. Just sit in your chair properly next time.” Yukio helps him up and grabs one of the textbooks, pausing when a paper slips out.
“Yeah, I’m alright,” Rin says with a bright grin. “Oh. What’s that?”
The sheet of paper has been folded in half twice. Someone penned a neat set of demon pharmaceutics practice questions on one side and a recipe on the other side. The same handwriting covers both sides.
“It doesn’t look like Tou-san’s penmanship.” Yukio tilts his head to peer over Rin’s shoulder. “Does it look familiar to you?”
“Wait.” Rin lifts his head so abruptly that he nearly hits Yukio’s chin. “Uh, never mind. I can’t really tell.”
