These are trying times. But they are necessary times. Bystanders are no longer allowed. Either you stand on the right side; on the side of freedom and choice, of equality and understanding. Or you stand on the wrong side; on the side of hate and prejudice, of ignorance and discrimination.
You don’t get to choose to stay out of this. History will remember where you stood. Your friends and your family will remember where you stood. Ignoring the problem is what brought us where we are today. And we have problem. America, and society as a whole, has a problem.
Racism like capitalism, like war and self-determinism, are the foundations on which America was built. America has the potential to be the greatest country that ever was and ever will be. But will never realize that potential until we address our collective failings. Running away from the truth does not make it any less true.
Now is a time for self-reflection and education. Ignorance is no longer an excuse, and it never was. Racism, like sexism and bigotry, is a learned behavior. And if it is learned, it can be unlearned. But it can only be unlearned with a critical self-examination of what brought us here. The journey ahead will not be comfortable and it will not be easy, it shouldn’t be. But like the protests from years back and the protests going on today, it is necessary.
We must make a better world for our children (and the children of others), it is the least that we owe them.
