Eugene's cheeks are so pink one would think he got makeup on, and his eyes get glassy from a few strays tears shed for laughing too much. He's got that brown jacket on top of a white t-shirt, and his jeans are a very nice blue.
He looks cute, he thinks, almost immediately followed by a, oh no.
Something shows in his face because Eugene stops laughing abruptly and he shifts in his seat, facing him better.
"What? What is it?" He asks, alarmed. "Why you got that look on your face?"
Julian shakes his head and drags both his hands down his face, grimacing.
"It's nothing, just… Talking about Autumn got me thinking weird things."
"What weird things? Like, Frank's very impressive bench press the other day with a literal bench? Or…?" His friend's face twists into something funny. "Were you thinking about that one time Principal Hughs came into practice and she and coach Burke were making eyes at each other? Because I did."
Yeah, okay. Julian didn't need a reminder of that day, thank you very much. Coach Burke and Principal Hughs? Nope, never in a million years, the whole football team had watched that and dipped immediately.
He scrunches up his nose in distaste and shakes his head to clear away the reminder, not knowing exactly what to say.
"Ugh, no, obviously no, it's just… I mean, it's nothing, but I guess I just got into my feelings too much. Doesn't matter, it's not that important."
Eugene does that thing he does whenever he hears something he doesn't personally agree with, and usually, he's good at letting things go; he's nosy, has admitted to that himself, and he especially doesn't like it when his friends keep their feelings bottled up and refuse to talk about what's bothering them. Julian knows that much.
So when he sees him make that face and get even more comfortable on the seat, he knows he's doomed.
"C'mon, Julian," he mumbles, very softly, "you know I won't laugh, I promise."
"Even if it's very silly?"
"Even if it's Myra's level of silly."
Julian lets out a tiny laugh, something equally as soft as Eugene's voice in that moment. He thinks about Autumn, the very few girls he's gone on a date with ever since breaking up with her. There were a few, some from other schools, some he knows from his neighborhood. They lasted less than three dates before calling it quits because he just couldn't look past Autumn.
This won't be any different, he knows.
"I… I just thought about how it'd feel like to kiss you." Admitting it takes more courage than he has at that very moment, so he closes his eyes, hoping to draw more from somewhere. "That's all."
There's a terrible, long silence.
Outside, the barking of a dog pulls his attention to the window, where a massive Cane Corso faces off against a tiny chihuahua, who's losing his marbles barking nonstop against the giant dog.
There's a leash dragging behind the tiny dog and a hurried owner rounds the corner, out of breath.
"Oh my god, Tony! Get away from that dog!" What's more surprising is that the one shouting that is not the chihuahua's owner, but the cane corso's. Tony, the big dog, gets pulled back by the man who rounded the corner, but the chihuahua follows.
Eugene's hesitant voice draws his attention back to where he's sitting. He's got that slightly furrowed brow on and he's biting his lower lip, looking at Julian with shadowed eyes. He's still cute like this, he thinks again, and then he leans forward until his head hits the steering wheel.
Julian's eyes fly open almost immediately, not at all believing what he's hearing. Eugene's leaning back on his seat, but he watches Julian with a calm smile, and something soft in his eyes.
He shrugs. "Sure, why not. It's just a kiss, and… And, we're friends, isn't it?" He says this slightly more doubtful, but not backing down at all. "Isn't it? We could totally do this… Platonically."
There is no way in hell you get to kiss your friends and it stays a platonic thing, but he's not exactly sure of pointing that out when it's very obvious Eugene is saying it more for his sake than his own. There's no fear in his eyes, no laughter in them. He's serious serious, he realizes very suddenly.
