i know its ironic to say this coming from a ianto blog since i am obviously a big ianto fan but i do wish people would stop centering ianto and janto so much. i mean yeah i also have a fave character again i run a ianto blog but like in the story hes not actually all that important hes replaceable to torchwood the organisation like all its employees are and while hes obviously like friends with the other team members and lovers with jack hes just a person like any other person you know? there's this tendency to make ianto be jack's most important lover ever and jack has never loved that much before and will never love that much again but thats just not true. it just so happens ianto is there in the timespan of the show but jack has had other important people in his life before. and like he says himself that he doesn't want to forget any of them its not just ianto. if anyone is more important than the others its the doctor because jack literally says the doctor made him a good person and hes constantly chasing the doctor and trying to live up to them. ianto is not the center of the world hes just a man. big finish does amplify the problem by still mostly centering ianto in stories set after his death but i would hope that in 2026 people would realise you can love more than one person especially when the previous lovers are literally dead

to be clear i think its fine to post about your favourite characters and pairings a lot like again i run a ianto blog i obviously post ianto a lot. but the way torchwood gets interpreted by a certain subsection of fans to make ianto into jack's end-all be-all really weakens the story and the characters. jack is a character with a lot of love to give in all senses of the term and limiting him to only loving ianto is just really sad for him. getting a new partner or even just being less sad day-to-day doesnt mean he's forgetting ianto or that he didnt love him but that life goes on and you have to make the best of it (even gdl said ianto would want jack to still be happy even if it means meeting someone else after some fans' negative reaction to alonso in the end of time). the common reframing to make everything about the characters related to their relationship in some way really just weakens them a lot

Torchwood, “Adam”

speaking of main character death. honestly torchwood generally does it pretty well and even tho you know from the beginning that everyone's going to die because theyre constantly reminding you that nobody leaves this place intact you still feel absolutely crushed every time. the whole point of the show is that none of the characters are "safe" and that its a tragedy so they all die unfulfilled. but if i reallyyyy had to choose one thats most unnecessary in s1-3 itd be tosh lol. owen is already dying which concludes his character arc and one main character death can definitely be enough + its the end of the episode anyway so its not progressing any kind of plot or whatever. of course it does tie into the themes of the show and theres the tragic aspect that tosh and owen died from something the other couldve easily prevented but yeah out of all of them tosh is the only one you could reasonably argue is unnecessary. or esther who has it awful but i know most of Tumblr doesnt care about miracle day
