Paul Cézanne, Scipio (1866). The Cézanne exhibition at the Turbine House (Tate Modern) is the best exhibition ever mounted there, and it is certainly a spectacular introduction to Cézanne. I spent my morning today working my way through it. Among other things, we get an introduction to Cézanne’s politics, which turn out to be a copy, more or less, of his high school buddy Émile Zola’s politics—that is, pretty lefty by mid-nineteenth century French standards. Unsurprisingly, he detested Napoléon III’s politics, and particularly his slithering indulgence of the cotton-producing American south during the Civil War. For Cézanne, the Southerners were monsters, and their treatment of slaves was beyond reprehensible. Which leads us to the portrait of “Scipio.” Scipio’s actual name was Gordon, and he escaped from a Mississippi plantation in 1863, bearing on his back the marks of his repeated and merciless whippings. Gordon told his story in Harper’s (July 4, 1863) and then made his way to France, where he spoke about the plight of American Blacks under slavery. He met Cézanne, who decided to paint his portrait in 1866.
