Notes on You
PERFORMANCE NOTES It seems obvious now, but to work out the performance issues with video you need to do one song at a time, critique it...repeat and rinse. This won't make you perfect, but it will give you a good foundation with each song, in terms of the basic emotions & the essential mood... less guesswork, less crapshoot. I don't think there's one of these that would not benefit from better glottal closure. Too folky or rocky otherwise. There's still way too much tension in your face, even doing the stuff you know well, so it's not that. YOU HAVE TO RELAX YOUR FACE. You have to learn to be still. Huge time waste to stop during the performance and nitpick. Wastes time twice, both in the doing and in the reviewing. Also: With each line that you sing, give a reading that is at least nominally in the ballpark of the intended emotion. Focus. Concentrate. There are missed opportunities that extremely simple changes would solve. YOUR FACE is a TV SCREEN for the SONG. YOU HAVE TO PRESENT IT. "You Do Something To Me" Not so full of motion, not so chipper and cheery... rather, blissed out, and still. Small motions. "Top Hat, White Tie, And Tails" Your posture should always be good, but for this one I think you should have almost a military bearing, and proper (but genteel!)... Make me believe you actually wear a top hat... and that it's natural on you. Similarly, your voice should be refined. Must have great glottal closure for this one. "Easy To Love" Like You Do Something..., this needs to be still. I was thinking of the Michael Caine anecdote and the phrase "do nothing." But this person isn't blissed out… he's awake; alive and focused... Vocally, you needs to butch it up. Get more low and in their peers There's plenty of vulnerability already, and there's enough delicacy in the lyric — get as much body into the vocal as possible. If that can't happen, you might consider changing keys. "Brazil" Comping has to be straightened out, or it's a mess. Be more direct and focused with the delivery. "I Like The Likes" Glottal closure. I think keeping things clean is a small trick to evoking that era. Playing: Pick, don't strum. The melody is fairly staccato, so the comp should be briefer. Performance: Is it possible for you to somehow darken up this character? The prissy and cheery doesn't seem to be successful. "My Blue Heaven" Think round tones with this one; it's spready and bordering on nasal at the moment… "Why Try And Change Me Now" New key good. Not bad.
