one of my favorite neil hc will always be that after baltimore, when he finally starts feeling safe to some degree, he sleeps a lot during the day

not everywhere, he still has that survival instinct in him, but when andrew or the older foxes are around he just…naps. he naps on andrew’s shoulder on the roof, on the couch during movie nights, in columbia while the others get ready; he has a lot of sleep to recover and when he’s with his people he feels like he can rest. he doesn’t have to pay attention, he can relax and just let go for some hours

y’know how neil has been in survival mode all his life and will probably crash as soon as his brain understands he’s safe?? I think we’ve been seeing a bit of that in jean’s books; there are bits & moments where neil seems to say/hear something that reminds him of what happened (in baltimore & in general with his father) and he dissociates.

it’s nothing “dramatic” or big, but jean does describe neil with “he was somewhere else” and he does it more than once.

also following this up with; I know nora’s said neil will never trust betsy enough to go to therapy (aside from one or two sessions in his senior year & when neil went to betsy to tell her that andrew needed a mother during aaron’s trial) but I’m a firm believer he will. not because he wants to, but more out of necessity (or maybe a deal of sorts).

the whole thing about neil is that he keeps his shit together because he has to & that’s all he’s ever known. but now that he’s out of danger, he will need a stronger support system because that’s just too much shit to keep together for all his life without unpacking some.

I have no idea if i already posted this here, but i was going through my computer and found it.

I imagine this as where Neil is a raven who has to fight tooth and nail to be alive, he sees and goes through so much pain on the daily that sometimes he gets lost in all the darkness in his head. Andrew (a fox) is the one good thing in his life, the only light and piece of happiness Neil has ever had, and he will do ANYTHING to keep andrew as far away from his painful reality as possible. So much so that andrew has no idea of what neil goes through, he just thinks neil gets a bit sad sometimes, so he makes it his full time job to comfort and take care of his neil.

Neil never lets anyone see him sad, hurt, or tired, he keeps his persona of a strong, uncaring and menace of a guy, but sometimes he just hits his limit, sometimes he's just so tired of all this pain, so he allows himself to be a bit vulnerable around andrew.

Andrew doesn't know that sometimes.. he is the only thing keeping Neil alive.

Neil might tell him one day.. or Neil might just vanish one day.. it all depends on how his week will go before he can see andrew again.

I wrote this in 20 minutes during work hours so if it sucks... just leave me alone.

Neil being a math nerd is something that's just so special to me

like, yeah, he's the runaway son of a serial killer. he saw his father take a man apart. he was on the run for eight years. he might've killed people while on the run. he burned his mother's corpse and buried her bones. his father has connection with the yakuza. his mother comes from a british crime family. he inherited his father's anger and has to physically wipe his father's smile from his face.

but he's also a math nerd, did you know that? he loves numbers and equations and the challenge of hard exercises and the way they just make sense to him and the rush of getting them right

Are we going to talk about how when Neil got shot, he was so scared and traumatized that he wore a bulletproof vest for weeks, refusing to take it off even to take a shower, and Mary was the one to talk him into it. Because in the books, Neil is so focused on surviving just a little longer, we don't really get a full sense of how traumatized he was by a lot of things. You can see it in his habits and paranoia, but never directly
