Que lindo el otoño en Mendoza! – Jose
We posed a series of questions to winemaker Jose Lovaglio on #ChardDay - May 24. In honor of what's become a global online tasting event, Jose gets personal about the popular variety. (We were tasting Bodini Chardonnay while chatting, naturally.) Q - If Chardonnay were a celebrity, who would it be? A - Jose Lovaglio - It would be Megan Fox (laughing). Q - For which occasion do you usually open a bottle of Chardonnay? A - Year round! But more so during summer, next to the pool, with friends! Q- What are the main differences between Chardonnay and Torrontés ? We know you make both... A- These are very different varieties! Torrontés is local, Chardonnay is global...Torrontés has strong ties with Muscat for aromas. Q- What are your most creative Chardonnay descriptors? A- For the traditional ones...White fruit characters (apple, peach, pears). For the non-traditional: reminds me of picnics just after a rainy day. Q- To oak or not to oak? That is the question. (Now we're laughing.) A- It depends...Let the wine speak for itself. Q- What kind of cheeses pair well with Chardonnay - in your experience? A- If the wine has undergone ML it will pair well with heavier types. Mmm, now we're hungry, too.

Greg got me a pair of badass cowboy boots, bless his soul! Jose
Bodini stands for “Built On Dreams of Individuals Not Institutions”. We found these Malbec-ophiles - and had a graet time - when we poured Bodini at the opening of new restaurant El Huarache Loco. Veronica Salazar, El Huarache Loco chef-owner, realized her dream thanks to La Cocina. This fantastic organization provides support to entrepreneurs to help them create food businesses.
Cool Eco Fact: Bodini Malbec and Chardonnay are packaged in lightweight bottles called "Eco bottles" to lighten the lower the impact on the environment. Bodini's cartons are also made of 100% recycled cardboard.
Q - What is your favorite part about harvest time in Mendoza? A - Jose Lovaglio - The smell of yeast and grape juice in the air when tanks are fermenting. The light buzz you get from CO2 when you open the winery early in the morning and all the doors and windows have been shut the night before (the gas accumulates inside and you feel lightheaded until it dissipates off - fun but harmless stuff!). Also sampling wine straight from tanks!
Bodini is about the pursuit of dreams - the dreams of the vineyard workers to work passionately in their sustainably-farmed, high-elevation vineyards, and the dream of our young 2nd generation winemaker, Jose Lovaglio, to make his own mark. Five percent of Bodini profits are donated to charities in Mendoza, including the Dominio del Plata Scholarship Foundation, providing education opportunities to winery worker families throughout Argentina.
Tasting is an essential part of the job...
Q - When did you start getting interested in wine and why? A - Jose Lovaglio - I started getting interested in wine from a very young age…The smells of fermentation, the glitter of stainless steel tanks and pipes, machines that looked like giant robots, all of this things caught my attention when I was very young. When I was in school and joined my mother during her daily rounds at the winery I was surprised to smell fermenting juice that my mother said had good potential and was eventually going to become a great wine. I found it very strange how she could predict that a given lot was going to be better than others so early in the process...
The fruit is in and the tasting has begun - I found this year's Malbec to have a variety of profiles - some spicy and concentrated, others lighter and with fresh plum/ licorice characteristics. - Jose
I've been capturing aspects of the harvest - a handful of grape skins here, a journal entry there. I hope you enjoy. - Jose
