A Small Leak
A scanning electron micrograph captures a burst capillary http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capillary, with red blood cells spilling out one at a time. To appreciate the scale of this image, a single human red blood cell is about 8 microns in diameter. You would need to place 1,250 red blood cells in a row to make a line extending a single centimeter – about the width of a sugar cube.
Capillaries are the body’s smallest blood vessels. Some are smaller in diameter than the blood cells they carry. (Red blood cells are quite flexible and easy to bend.) The endothelial linings or walls of capillaries are just one cell layer thick.
It’s not uncommon for capillaries to burst or break. Allergic reactions, infections, the side effects of medications or treatments and physical trauma can all cause ruptures. Bruises are the result of broken blood vessels leaking into surrounding tissue.
But capillaries do have some protection against bursting caused by internal pressure. It’s called LaPlace’s Law, which says that the larger the radius of a vessel, the greater the wall tension required to withstand a given internal fluid pressure. Arteries and veins around the heart, where blood flow is strongest, have thick walls. There’s not much internal tension in distant capillaries, where red blood cells may be passing almost single file.

Just printed this for my refrigerator. Thanks tumblr, once again you are AWESOME.
In case you’re wondering how accurate this is, I compared them to a local restaurants sheet they have in their kitchen and everything is dead on.
Here is that sheet I was telling you about earlier anon
I’ll file this under ‘Easy To Understand But Hard To Practice Ideas’.
the caption is perfect. easy to understand alright an that makes it even more frustrating when you don’t do it!
