Anyone know how to set up a sump?
I’ve been reading up on them and am reconsidering setting one up on my 150g. But I’m having a hard time figuring out how to set one up and determine the proper flow rate and such for a freshwater tank.
I’m looking at using an Eshopps PF-1000 or PF-1200 HOB Overflow(Up to 900/1000gph respectively), an Eheim Compact+ 3000 Pump (792gph - only looking at this one in particular because there’s one for sale for cheap on my local craigslist), and a 40 - 50g tank as a sump? This is the part I’m having the hardest time with. I don’t know what equipment to choose. :(
I know I want in my sump: Filter pads, Bio media, heater, and an area to grow out plants, fry, and live food.
So I was thinking something like this?
I spent entirely too much time making it (you can tell where I realized this and gave up). It’s probably over complicated in some places and under complicated in others…but hopefully someone can give me some advice on that? I already see a couple faults…One, that there’s no flow in the “refugium” part…Not opposed to basically sponge filtering that area? And two, that the mechanical filtration to keep it from getting too funky in there would block the light that would be above that area. I dunno, I need to think about it more. This depiction was entirely a “sit down and see what comes out of my head” first draft. So definitely room for improvement.
