Thunder watched with every bit of vexation as his newest (and only) racer lazily hovered over the track's finish line. It took everything the young stallion had to not strangle the other as he sauntered over; His infectious, ridiculous, obnoxious cocky smile plastered on his stupid face.
"Morning Boss!" Kestrel cooed, his fur fluffed as he approach the seething unicorn. His wings fluttering awkwardly, If Kestrel was honest whenever Thunder was around.
"I would be doing better," Thunder ground his teeth "If you took training with any modicum of sincerity. This isn't the Isle's, this is real racing; and if you don't focus and stop playing around you're going to fuck up your debut." Thunder sucked in a breath in an attempt to regather his bleeding nerves. "I need you to lock the fuck in Kestrel."
"That's why I started training early today," Kestrel skittered back a couple hoofsteps, his ears pinned back against his head gesturing towards the open track "I was doing warmup laps."
"for an hour, Kestrel I've seen you fly faster, I know you can fly better then that shitshow I saw."
"Shit! Show! This may not be important to you, if you fuck up your debut all that happens is you go back over that stupid ocean back to your family's weird kelp farm. Get a pat on the back for trying, have your ego coddled back to health or whatever and move on."
"that's not-."
"BUT I! I'll have to live with the consequences! I have to deal with the disappointment! I have to live with that failure! I LOSE MY DREAM CAREER! While you get to go live your life doing fuck all, I lose EVERYTHING because I was an idiot and actually stuck my neck out to give you a chance at this race!"
"But you'll still get paid Thunder, I mean you'll be able try with a new candidate. I would-."
"No! Kestrel! If you fuck up, you get paid, you can find a new trainer and sponsor and try again. I can't just find a new candidate!"
"I just my debut-."
"It's not just YOUR debut you it's MINE too." Suddenly Thunder's frustration started to make some sense, the weight of it forced Kestrel's facade of confidence to come crumbling down to earth.
the silence was so deafening Kestrel could hear his heart beat against his ears. Thunder came closer as Kestrel went to say something.
"I am riding everything on you," Thunder placed a hoof on Kestrel's chest, his voice a low. "if you don't make the debut... we're done, I am never speaking to you again. I'll make sure you never get a chance to see me, let alone speak to me again." that, was the sharpest sting Kestrel ever had in his life. The void left in Thunder's place as he walked away, the inescapable cold where the ghost of his hoof had been grew louder. Kestrel had a lot of work to do, a lot of apologizing to do; yet for some reason he couldn't will his wings to take flight.
The skies and wind refused to yield to him. It had started to rain, yet there wasn't a single cloud to be seen as the sun crested the horizon.
