Happy Monday everyone, I am here once again and I need to yap. And by yap, I mean scream.
Do you guys know what I miss?
Email newsletters and RSS feeds for games.
I gave up pretty much every mainstream social media three years ago. But guess what didn’t?
That’s right, the square hole companies 😔
So, these last few years I’ve been a little more behind on the uptake for announcements and news. Generally speaking, my IRL is much much busier and I’ve got a whole lot going on that hasn’t slowed down enough for me to catch my breath. What would really help me is if I didn’t have to have a twitter or insta to see any kind of relevant news! I am not always able to consistently check the direct website for a company either…. And sometimes the news just isn’t available outside of Twitter. Which, is bad. Awful. Terrible!
But I digress.
Recently there was an announcement from Animate that they would begin doing the 30th/20th anniversary goods!! Yay!!
…but it actually started 2 weeks ago and there are only two weeks left until this ends. Man.
This anniversary in general has left me with some Big Feelings. I am getting similar vibes as the 25th anniversary.
Like, am I crazy or does it feel super commercialized at this point? It hasn’t been a totally recent thing. It actually happened around 2016 with the 20th anniversary. These huge milestones are PR and marketing money printers, sure, but there’s just something about it that I can’t put my finger on. It just doesn’t feel right. And it all keeps building up, ever since I saw the “developer insights” on the official anniversary website.
It’s supposed to be a celebration, but it genuinely has been feeling artificial… and that makes me sad.
Newly Lost: Story of Seasons Mobile - Cancellation of Development and Business Partnership
Hi there! You're going to be reading about a certain business decision from a few places today, if you follow game media news. This is more or less that same topic, but overall an attempt (from me) to go over what just happened with some pre-context and current context. A majority of you probably will not care too deeply about the finer details, but this is for anyone who likes seeing that sort of thing. This will be a very long post! You have been warned. : )
Contrary to other articles out there on this issue, this is proudly made with no AI - I am powered only by hyper-focused, special interest-driven insanity in this house.
So, what's the deal? Why was Tencent involved? What is this game I've never heard of until now?
During the global shutdown, Marvelous received significant capital from Chinese gaming conglomerate Tencent. This provided stability for ongoing IP development and helped Marvelous weather the pandemic's impact on production and sales.
The relationship began in March 2019, when Marvelous announced an IP licensing agreement allowing Tencent to develop a mobile title based on the Bokujou Monogatari (Story of Seasons) series. A year later, in May 2020, the two companies deepened this connection into a full capital alliance. Tencent acquired a ~20% stake in Marvelous through its Hong Kong subsidiary, Image Frame Investment, to the tune of roughly $65 million USD. This investment made Tencent Marvelous's largest shareholder at the time.
The announcement came 2 years prior to the series' 25th anniversary, but it didn't have anything to do with any projects (ongoing or planned) for the Switch, Switch 2, or other consoles as part of the main series. It was purely a mobile initiative from China. Meaning, this probably had nothing to do with the multiplayer console game Marvelous announced in their previous Direct. Hopefully. Fingers crossed.
A lot of news sites are reporting that in the 7 years since this announcement, there's been no substantial updates. Which, is not true! The number is closer to 4 years. Still, not too great, but let's maintain some modicum of factual journalism here! Below, I'll cover the timeline of events as best as I can, with sources attached.
The first update, March 28th, 2019
Marvelous released a public statement announcing that Tencent has signed an agreement with the company in order to develop the Bokumono IP into a mobile game. Handling the new mobile title would be Tencent's subsidiary, NExT Studios.
August 12th, 2019 - The "First Concept" press release is distributed.
The official press release package for the mobile game released early gameplay footage and concepts. (These images were then shared on the official Weibo page later, on October 6th, 2019. )
Source
October 4th, 2019 - The first build demo shown to public via Weibo
This was a recording of the first demo of the game, showcasing the area shown in the original concepts from August. It was roughly the "6-months into full production development" update.
The video is still available here at the time of this post. Apologies on the quality of these screenshots, it wasn't really easy to get this past 720p.
Notable features:
Premium Currencies - The (+) means the player can obtain more through cash purchases...
Possible User-targeted bundles/ads for premium shop offers in an Ad/News Flash-style Carousel (seen before the video blurs the right-side UI)
Stamina system (represented by Hearts) - left side UI
Farm Building and Farm Plot Buffs - top left corner of UI, first line "Level 1: 作物收获 +0%", or "Crop Yield +0%"
Farming Plot Limits - top left corner of UI, second line "农田数量: 5/6" or "Farmland Use: 5/6". The plots are small (5x3, 15 squares) by design.
A Player Title system - the preview user is VIP 18 as seen in the top left corner of the UI. Along with a possible avatar system... (the blank space that is framed by the VIP rank ribbon)
A Quest system - Displayed by the 务 (Rènwù - "Quest/Task") titled black box on the left-side UI
Timers on tasks at the farm (including growth, watering, harvesting)
A Star ranking system for crops - at 00:19 the user is seen harvesting "2-star Strawberry x2"
Early NPCs, which are found out around the playable world space; even spotted visiting your farm area (seen at 0:21-0:28)
Commentary from me: This is purely speculative you see, but that right-hand carousel displaying a "starter bundle" wouldn't surprise me all. It could also very well be the placement of a news update reel. The working female protagonist design had some back and forth on the color palette used! But...given that it's right under the premium currency area leaves me with little other thoughts...
December 2019 - An annual style survey was sent out to fans
Previously hosted at this url, https://wj.qq.com/s2/5182627/f0ff/ , the survey was announced on the 16th but started on December 19th, 2019 and repeated on December 20th, 2020 as well as one other time not recorded specifically (but in December 2021), for a total of three surveys. During the 2020 survey, the development team noted that the overall style of the game had been reworked a total of 4 times so far since production began...
You can see a version of the survey that is still live here: 牧场物语 OL 美术风格用户调研(TapTap) - 腾讯问卷
I recorded and translated the survey in full back in 2021, and the form never changed from what I personally observed. (Translation available in alt text.)
Commentary from me: When this survey was sent for a third time in 2021, I asked Mika Nunokawa, artist for Tree of Tranquility and Animal Parade, directly if she was involved with the development of this game, due to the depictions of her artstyle and its likeness used for the survey. In short, the answer was No. (The long answer is that she hadn't been contacted by or had anything to do with Marvelous operations in 10 years at that point.) Not a great look here...
February 10th, 2020 - Tencent announces its top anticipated games to release in 2020
Included here is then-titled Story of Seasons Online, slated to release later in 2020. Unfortunately, they did not release in 2020 due to the global pandemic.
February 25th, 2020 - The official Weibo updates with new artwork following the first style survey
Source: 锵锵!2020,艰难... - @牧场物语手游的微博 - 微博
This update included showing off some of the planned NPCs - one bachelorette and one bachelor - as well as the protagonists design in their first rework. Fans met Nicole and Sebastian for the first time.
April 27th, 2021 - The TapTap page officially updates with news after a year and 2 months of silence
Yet again, this followed feedback from the last style survey, with another change in overall feeling.

The town is revealed to be named Starfall Town, and this news release showed off a few more characters. Unfortunately, it's only viewable in full if you have the TapTap application. The update did not include the names of these characters, but there were two bachelorettes and two bachelors, as well as a character that was suspiciously identical to Mayor Thomas! There were images of the environment setting concepts added to the Weibo page the same day. Incidentally, the update also did not mention any details about gameplay, only that the game would allow players to customize their facial features and hair styles.
May 16th, 2021 - Story of Seasons Mobile receives its official Final Style debut at the Tencent Annual Games Conference 2021

The title officially updated from OL/Online -> Mobile with this announcement.

Originally scheduled for National Day Golden Week, it was delayed due to COVID-19 containment measures in Guangzhou and the Festival expo was later held from October 29-31, 2021. November 19th, 2021 - Story of Seasons Mobile's Focus Test Group announcement relaunched on the Weibo and QQ pages

It was meant to take place on November 6th, but ended up postponed temporarily due to COVID-19 precautions in Chongqing. The first post was taken down as they rescheduled. The event was moved to November 27th, and from the 19th to the 21st, fans could fill out a questionnaire via QR code to be entered for test group selection.
November 27th, 2021 - Story of Seasons Mobile Focus Test at the Ivy Four Seasons Garden Hotel
Source
They posted a video of this on their bilibili and weibo pages.
(Not very riveting.) A group of at least 20 focus testers were taken to a zoo to see animals before being brought by bus to the Ivy Four Seasons Garden Hotel. It was a montage of cuts showing the testers in a room, discussing and writing down their feelings and thoughts about the development build. Everything about the process was conveniently censored in creative ways. Alas.
December 31st, 2021 - Tencent announced their participation in Firefly Anime Game Carnival
NExT Studios announced their participation in FFAGC, promising to bring the farming experience to players. This was announced on several channels, including their bilibili page. You can also see the announcement video on the weibo page, which includes a timelapse of the event venue's construction.
January 1-3, 2022 - Tencent finally debuted Story of Seasons Mobile's showroom build to players at Firefly
The appearance was at the 27th Firefly Anime Game Carnival, which took place January 1-3, 2022, at booth A02.
NExT Studios released a video of the event on bilibili, but the official weibo page included images as well. Official cosplayers for Popuri, Gray, and the goddess of Starfall Town were at the event as venue staff. There was also a cosplayer/staff member for an anthropomorphic cow mascot, dressed up in Lolita coord. Fans who attended the event were able to try for merchandise giveaways through mini-games and lotteries. There was a wall with all the main games of the series in boxes for pictures (selfies). But, most importantly, players were able to try the game for the first time at Firefly.
It's strongly implied that popular and familiar characters from Mineral Town would make their appearance within the game, based on feedback from attendees at this event.
The Final Update - February 1st, 2022
A video posted to the weibo for Lunar New Year 2022. This would serve as the last official post from all socials regarding the game.
Later, on TapTap, a user posted the registration information for Story of Seasons Mobile. The post was dated August 17th, 2022.

July 31st, 2026: Marvelous' official (English) shareholder letter confirms that Tencent has dropped the game developer from their list of investments. Source
Marvelous and Tencent have mutually agreed to dissolve their capital and business alliance. Tencent reviewed its global investment portfolio and decided to adjust how it distributes capital, opting to reinvest heavily in AI and companies that primarily utilize AI technologies. In response, both companies decided it was best to end their alliance. Tencent is selling off its ~12.17 million shares in Marvelous to other investors (including Marvelous buying back some of its own shares, SBI Securities, and another Japanese business firm). As a result, Tencent is no longer a major shareholder in Marvelous.
Tencent has also decided to stop development on the Story of Seasons mobile game ("Story of Seasons Mobile"), citing changes in the market environment and profitability concerns. Although this specific mobile project is canceled, the original contract signed in 2019 technically remains active, so the two companies are not completely burning bridges.
As of August 1st, 2026, Story of Seasons Mobile is now formally cancelled.

So - the really neat thing about this is that the board dump contained the game as a .gb file. I popped it in my brick (ye ole faithful DMG) and it was able to play without issues. The game is supposed to be .gbc! I did a comparison of the two - the original actual file from my official cart and the obvious bootleg file - and apart from compilation (and thus, file extension) there is no difference between the two as the file size, architecture, and checksums unrelated to platform structure are the same. This was a $15 mercari purchase that is now essentially priceless to me specifically lol
I also cleaned up the sticker so you can experience the hot mess in its original glory!
Good morning farmers, we're just 6 days from the 30th anniversary of Bokujou Monogatari. Unfortunately, I have some news to share; Overall, it is neutral, but skews negative because it includes a game cancellation announcement.
Previously, I discussed that there were rumors of Tencent divesting its shares in Marvelous as a means to reevaluate their investment and recoup business expenses. That has been confirmed today, thanks to Automaton Media. (Before you panic, please make sure to read the previous post!)
This announcement comes as a hit to Marvelous' business power, as Tencent has signaled that the company has not performed to their forecast, going so far to call the company an underperformer with little expected ROI.
The announcement also comes with a game cancellation - the Bokujou Monogatari Mobile Game (牧场物语手游 Mùchǎng wùyǔ shǒu yóu). This was announced in 2021 during the shutdowns, when Tencent became the main shareholder and investor for business relations and an attempt was made to expand Story of Seasons into mainland China. The mobile game was part of the 25th anniversary, although it went under-reported with all the other 25th anniversary news going on at the time. If you weren't a user of QQ or Weibo, it's likely that you didn't see much of this at all, so don't feel discouraged if you haven't seen this until now!
I'll be making a separate post (or two) showcasing what this game was going to be.
She energetically walks around the village with a walking stick in hand. The pattern on her hat is actually a ladybug! She also has flower appliqués on the knees of her pants; it's so typical of nature-loving Nina, isn't it?

"Seven-spot ladybug pattern" (七星てんとう虫柄)
"Appliqués on the knees"
"The waist portion of her pants is tied with a string"

Gary is never seen without a cigarette. You might think, 'Does he really love smoking that much?' But actually, he's currently trying to quit smoking, so he just keeps an unlit cigarette in his mouth.
Design notes:
"He always holds a cigarette in his mouth, but it's unlit. He's trying to quit smoking, but because his mouth feels lonely/bored without it, he holds on to it continuously."
"Around the back there, you can faintly see his hair sticking out beneath the hairnet."
"He wears multiple layers (jacket over a vest/shirt)."
"A pink towel hangs down from his left back pocket."
"He wears shoes made from leather."
"The back pocket under the towel features a cute cow face design visible on the pocket fold!"
I apologize for things being pictures for now (I usually scan these things!) My life is a little disrupted recently so I don't have the ability to really sit down and do scans at this point in time. But someday soon that will go back to normal...
"Moi spreads out a straw mat to collect donations, right? Well, this straw mat is actually Moi's own clothes! So… does that mean when Moi is sitting on the mat, he's completely naked!?"
