EXCERPT:
Mobius sighed, offered a small smile of reassurance to Sarah which she didn’t return, and took his dish off the table. Without a word, he moved over to the sink, gently moving Sarah out of the way, and began washing.
“I’m sorry,” Mobius said quietly over the water. Part of him just didn’t want to get into a shouting match, the other him knowing that the kids were awake after that final shout, and didn’t want them eavesdropping, “I know I haven’t been present recently. I’m just so close to cracking —”
“Save the excuse. I know you’re busy at work,” Sarah said, moving away from Mobius, tightening the belt on her robe.
“I am busy,” Mobius said, annoyance beginning to climb as he put the dish on the rack, “And I think if you had a greater appreciation for what I did then maybe you wouldn’t be so judgmental right now.”
Sarah stared at him, lips pursed together. The silence between them grew as they faced off on either side of the kitchen. The stand-off argument they had that night was the third one that week. Mobius knew where this would head if he didn’t do something, and fast.
“Make sure you get up early enough so the kids don’t know you slept down here,” Sarah spat before turning to head up the stairs, shutting off the hallway light.
