He's 30 years old and he ain't getting any uglier, I tell you that.
Jon & Skid Row celebrating Richie's birthday on stage.
Jon & Richie acoustic
These two shine the most in their acoustic sets. Richie doing his harmony thing (a third above Jon), and occasionally getting a few lead vocal lines :)
1988
Dec 31st 1988 Countdown To 1989: Live at Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan
Ride Cowboy Ride
The song official credited to Captain Kidd and the King of Swing.
Look at them sharing that mic. I also love how Jon's listening to the audience after his "wanna come with me tonight?" question ha.
1989

Livin' On A Prayer
Wanted Dead Or Alive
The blueprint!
That did NOT inspire MTV Unplugged (as it was already in development at that point), but influenced the type of acts they invited.
Here's Richie in 2012 on the The Preston and Steve Show - 93.3 WMMR show, talking about the VMA performance. He was worried about the mixing quality at the show and the cable mess, so he suggested to Jon they should just do acoustic versions to cut down the variables.

Born To Be My Baby
Livin' On A Prayer
Great to see Born To Be My Baby getting an acoustic spotlight. They originally wanted to put an acoustic version on the New Jersey album, before the producer persuaded them to go electric. (Apparently Jon stayed convinced it would have made no.1 in its original acoustic form.)
1990
Jan 10th 1990 Hammersmith Odeon, London, England
Shooting Star (Bad Company cover)
One of my favorite performance of theirs. I love this one for the intro, which is not in the video I linked above, but the above video has more audio than the other video version.
Love how they always shake hands at the end.
C'mon, release that whole show!

Never Say Goodbye
Richie delegated to the coach seat, and bitching about it. Precious :)
1991
Jan 3rd 1991 YOKOHAMA ARENA, Yokohama, Japan
Diamond Ring
A evocative performance of Diamond Ring, all slow and haunting, with Jon and Richie tinged in blue and pink stage lighting. When tensions were high in the band, and Jon and Rich were supposedly up-staging each other, which lead to great performances.

I like it because this song is truly a duet.

Richie coming in on that second verse is still my favorite RS moment. His smile after the audience reaction ✨
I couldn't agree more.

From the Access All Areas, A Rock & Roll Odyssey' (1990) documentary.
Shooting Star and going steady
Jon and Richie performed a gorgeous cover of Bad Company's "Shooting Star" at their charity concert in London, at the Hammersmith Odeon on January 10, 1990.
A video of that is part of the Access All Areas: A Rock & Roll Odyssey documentary.
In that video Jon intros the song like this:
"This is a song Bad Company did. And I used to work in these little bars and there was a band called Richie Sambora and Friends and it seems every time I come in he'd sing this song I guess it's almost a way of telling you where we steal our tricks from."
Turns out the documentary cut that intro down and altered it a bit (they also shortened the song).
Because if you listen to an audio-only version of the whole concert, there's more to it:
Jon: "This is a song Bad Company did. And I used to work in these little bars and there was a band called Richie Sambora and Friends and it seems every time I come in he'd sing this song I guess he's either had an inspiration or he's waiting for me to die. One or the other." Richie: "I used to sing it for Jon every time he used to come in ..." Jon: "Oh look at us. That means we're going steady or something."
Interesting that the bit about "stealing tricks from" must have been lifted from sometime else.
Now I also really want to listen to a version of this song performed by Richie Sambora and Friends!
If you read the lyrics, you realize why Richie favored this song. With his Beatles obsessions it must have felt like it was written for him. And then on top of that, he met this guy Jonny who clearly was meant to be a star ..
Lyrics of Shooting Star
Johnny was a schoolboy when he heard his first Beatles song "Love Me Do, " I think it was, and from there it didn't take him long Got himself a guitar, used to play every night Now he's in a rock 'n' roll outfit and everything's alright
Don't you know?
Johnny told his mama, "Hey, mama, I'm goin' away I'm gonna hit the big time, gonna be a big star someday, yeah" Mama came to the door with a teardrop in her eye Johnny said, "Don't cry, mama, smile, and wave goodbye"
Don't you know? Yeah, yeah
Don't you know that you are a shooting star? Don't you know? Don't you know? Don't you know that you are a shooting star? And all the world will love you just as long As long as you are
Johnny made a record, went straight up to number one Suddenly everyone loved to hear him sing the song Watchin' the world go by, surprisin' it goes so fast Johnny looked around him and said, "Well, I made the big time at last"
Don't you know? Don't you know?
Don't you know that you are a shooting star? Don't you know? Whoa, yeah Don't you know that you are a shooting star? Yeah And all the world will love you just as long As long as you are a shooting star
Don't you know that you are a shooting star? Don't you know? Ah, ah Don't you know that you are a shooting star now? And all the world will love you just as long As long as you are
Johnny died one night, died in his bed Bottle of whiskey, sleeping tablets by his head Johnny's life passed him by like a warm summer day If you listen to the wind, you can still hear him play
Oh, oh, oh
Don't you know that you are a shooting star? Don't you know? Don't you know? Don't you know that you are a shooting star? Don't you know?
Don't you know that you are a shooting star? Don't you, don't you, don't you, don't you, don't you know? Don't you know that you are a shooting star? Yeah Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh (whoo!)
Don't you, don't you know that you're a shooting star? Don't you, don't you know? Know, know, know, know Know, know, know, know, know, know, know, know Know, know, know, know, know
Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na, na-na-na (whoo) Na-na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na (whoo) Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na (whoo) Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na (whoo) Na-na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na, na-na-na, na-na, na-na-na (whoo)
Cheesing.
The yin to my yang
Jon talking about Richie, sometime during the New Jersey Syndicate tour most likely. I like how long he thinks before he comes up with the "yin to my yang" line.
"Rich is the ... yin to my yang, he's the left to my right. He's extremely talented at what he does. He's extremely ... nice [chuckles]. On the other hand, he's incredibly lazy. I know it's 1 o'clock in the afternoon, he's sleeping [laughs]"
Hold on to what you got.
They got each other, and that's a lot for love 😢
Jon and Richie and RIP magazine, New Year's in Japan 1990
The band famously ended their New Jersey Syndicate Tour in February 1990 in Mexico, and then went their separate ways. Rumors were flying high about ill feelings and possible breakups.
They temporarily got back together to play their first annual Xmas show in New Jersey, and then went to Japan for the New Year's show at Tokyo Dome and some concerts early January 1991. RIP magazine - in the form of journalist Lonn Friend and photographer Ross Halfin -tagged along for a cover story.
Laura Jackson's Jon Bon Jovi biography (2003) mentions this about a clear rift between Jon and Richie at this point in time:
Here's the mentioned photo composition - with Jon dominantly in front and Richie behind - that ended up on the magazine cover. [src]
The photographer says that the pair completely ignored each other during the photo-shoot and the journey to the location.
Which we have photographic evidence of as well.
Notable, the article does mention that they were all joking (and apparently laughing at Linda McCartney's vocals) during that ride. Just not with each other I guess.
(Side note: I love that shot of them. Learning about their vibes at this moments, puts it into perspective.)
The RIP article by Lonn Friend is great. It's capturing the uncertainties quite well. And he gets great insights by Richie hinting at the source of the problems.
Richie talks about how he needs a life beyond the tour and the band, in order to find inspiration for his art. While Jon's life is all about the band, non-stop, all business and budget oriented.
I love this snipped where the journalist describes Richie. Feels about right.
I like the romantic vision the journalist brings to their partnership: they are fire and water, mutually exclusive rock'n'roll personalities, bonded through deep friendship.
Even though they apparently didn't talk during the photo-shoot, in the interview sections it still comes through how much they acknowledge the magic of their partnership.
