Judgment free zone here.
Do you mean what point I'm making with this set or...?
What episode 4 told us is that the world became a simulation of Carol's worst nightmare.
A huge part of why Carol had such a visceral reaction to the hivemind is that they always have those smiles on their faces like the people at the conversion therapy camp her mother sent her to.
When you know this, various scenes are recontextualized. It's not just Helen's death (the love of her life, who's dead because of the virus), it's not just grief, it's Carol's sheer terror.
Combine "You were 16" with this moment:
Carol who was closeted, Carol who had to change her lesbian romantasy series to a het one so as to have a successful career.
"We accept all human beings as they are," Zosia/the hive claims except they have a man kiss Carol to transmit their virus even though they know she is a lesbian. By that point, they have Helen's memories.
"We accept and love you as you are, but we will forcibly assimilate you, we will 'fix' you. Come on, when you're normal like us, you'll never look back." Something that many homophobic bigots have said before.
"You'll understand soon enough."
It sounds like a threat to Carol's ears, because it is.
Like I said here, Carol has been fighting being forced into an intimacy nobody consented to.
