This has been a long running Catholic tradition in the Philippines, and it has been believed that by touching the statue, you are blessed for the entire year. With the sheer amount of attendees and duration of the procession, injuries, or even casualties, are nothing new. But during the recent years, the numbers of said injured people dropped.
