Diabetes in Dogs

Just like humans, dogs get the same diseases and illness as humans. Diabetes in dogs is no different to humans, dogs also suffer.  Diabetes is a life threatening disease and should be taken care of urgently. Dog diabetes should be treated by your vet seriously or you will be putting your pet’s life at risk. Below are some facts that you should know about diabetes in dogs.

Diabetes in dogs is a disease that attacks their endocrine glands and causes not to function properly. Like humans, diabetes in dogs has two types, diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus. Diabetes insipidus is lack of vasopressin while diabetes mellitus is when the body of the dog fails to produce insulin. A hormone that controls the way your dog's kidneys take in water is vasopressin.

Diabetes mellitus is one of the deadliest diseases that your dog can suffer if you are not aware of the symptoms. There are two types of diabetes mellitus in dogs, type 1 and type 2. Both human and dogs that have diabetes mellitus suffer similar effects.  

The type 1 diabetes in dogs is also called as juvenile dog diabetes. This type of diabetes is called “juvenile dog diabetes” because this type of diabetes in dog commonly shows up when the dog is younger or still a puppy, usually at age 2.

The type 2 diabetes is just the same with humans because this type of diabetes shows up when the dog is a bit older or already an adult dog. An adult body can no longer produce insulin that the dog’s body needed in order to make the internal organ function properly. If the dog is suffering this type 2 diabetes, insulin shots for your dog is needed and ensure that you check your dog’s sugar level.  But before giving insulin shot, make sure that its insulin level is low.
