One look I have been sporting more frequently lately is the turban hijab style. I’m loving this look right now mostly because the various ways to style them allows me to express the versatility of my style.
So in honor of the turban hijab style I decided to post a weekly turban look that I’m loving, with the hope of covering the wide region of fashion styles that are associated with turban hijab. Enjoy!
Week 1: The Glamorous turban
I have been rocking the glamorous turban at my interviews lately and have been loving it! There is just something so chic about this look. Every time I rock this look I feel like I’m saying “Yes, I’m high end fashion!”. It just remains me so much of old Hollywood glamour, back when actress dressed modestly and were still alluring.
Pair this look with large sunglasses and statement necklace and you’re sure to get compliments from other glamorous fashionistas.

Modest Fitness Week 1: The Journey of a Thousand Miles….
Throughout life we are often faced with many challenges. Anytime I am faced with a daunting task I often reflect upon the old Chinese proverb “The Journey of a thousand Miles, begins with a single step”. So here I am again facing another daunting task and once again finding myself reflecting back on this proverb.
Four years ago, I had moved away from home in pursuit of a medical degree. The program was difficulty and time consuming and I often found myself not having time to make meals and stress eating. As a result I started to put on weight. Now that I’m about to graduate, insha’Allah, I’m determined not to take the extra weight back home with me. So I’ve decided to kick start a new fitness regime, and share some of my weight loss strategies. I am doing this partly to hold myself accountable and partly to hopefully be of use to others. So be on the look out for weekly posts insha’Allah….
Week 1: Three Steps to creating your fitness Game plan
Step 1: Create your fitness goal.
Whether it’s to lose those extra 20lbs you put on for whatever reason, or to just become healthier and more fit, create a goal you can work towards.
Step 2: Make a Commitment.
Once you have a goal in mind, the next step should be to make a commitment to complete it no matter what. Set backs should be excepted but no used as excuse to give up. Instead, you should just dust yourself off and restart.
Step 3: Set the Date.
Pick a date you want to start making this fitness change. I would advise a time when you’re schedule is not so busy, preferable during a time when you have vacation time. This way you can’t use school or work as an excuse not to work out.
Most Arabic shows are actually Turkish shows that they dub into Arabic. Arabic productions are few and far between. You can watch the shows in Turkish with English subtitles on youtube but you have to look them up using their Turkish titles.
I don’t mind it being turkish as long as its Arabic dub I guess? I was hoping to get some listening practise in and I’ve seen a lot of telenovelas dubbed and a few Turkish ones but just haven’t been able to find them online? Maybe cause I don’t know their names?
If you just want to get listening practice then look them up using the Arabic titles. Gumus (Turkish)/Noor (Arabic) is the most popular of the dramas, and the easiest to find probably. They even dubbed it into Somali, and I watched pieces of it in Hargeisa where it was very popular.
Its about a girl who has an arranged marriage with a guy she has been secretly in love with since she was a child. What she doesn’t know is that he’s nursing a broken heart after the love of his life dies in a car accident and that he actually is being forced into this marriage by his family.
Noor wasn’t my cup of tea so I only watched the first few episodes. I may do a post about Turkish dramas. Some of them are amazing.
I think I’ve seen noor! I remember watching it at my neighbours in Kenya cause we didn’t have tv and just laughing at how the somali sounded. Please do the post! It’d be awesome start for people like me!!!

So some people like to call me Somalian, let me just break it down for ya real quick.

Nationality = Somali
Language = Somali
Somalian = Some alien
Somali = a member of a dope ass group of people inhabiting the Horn of Africa
There is no such thing as “Somalian”
And to all the people who give me side eye when I correct them like “it’s no big deal” Yes it is. This is part of my identity and I’ll be damn if you go around calling us something else because you do not want to take the time to learn what what we call ourselves.
Shit I dont go around calling German ppl Germanians or Germish.
Summer is a struggle fashion wise for many of us hijabis, between the constant “aren’t you hot wearing that” and the very limited selection of hijabi friendly styles, I can honestly say that I look forward with eager anticipation to the Fall/Winter collections.
Anything. Story’s hit me like a flash oflightening: one second I’m busily occupied with my everyday life, the nextsecond I see something, read something or hear something and all of a sudden a story begins tounravel in my mind. For the past six month’s I’ve had this story in my head.But as anyone who knows me well will tell you, I always write the beginning andend but it’s the middle I struggle with. I think because like traditional Somalis I am more a story teller than a writer.
My friends say I’m a hijabi hippie. Strangers describe me as “the nice quiet girl”. I think of myself as being pretty easy going. I am quiet mostly because I am “unwilling to speak, unless (I) expect to say something that will amaze the whole room, and be handed down to posterity with all the éclat of a proverb” (I had to put that Pride and prejudice quote in there).
It depends on what you mean by young. I believe you should spend your late teens and early twenties finding yourself and getting an education. I was also raised to believe that everyone should be self sufficient before they get married, because you never know what surprises life has in store for you.
