Malala Yousafzai’s Biopic Gul Makai Promises To Pay Tribute To Her Brave Legacy
In 2012, a young Pakistani girl taught us the true meaning of “The pen is mightier than the sword.” Malala Yousafzai’s fight for peace and education in a country that was plagued by war was a voice that was heard around the world. Now, the Nobel laureate has inspired her very own biopic titled Gul Makai. Named after the pseudonym that Malala had used for her blogs, the film will be directed by Amjad Khan.
The film will feature the television actress Reem Shaikh as Malala Yousafzai, Divya Dutta as her mother, and late actor Om Puri will also be seen playing a pivotal role in the movie. Director Amjad mentioned that he intends Gul Makai to be his tribute to everything that Malala represents and has achieved as a young and inspiring icon.
The official synopsis of the film reads, “Gul Makai accounts the courageous journey and struggle of Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, from her humble upbringing in the Swat Valley to her becoming the champion for free education to all. Gul Makai is a small tribute to this lion-hearted girl who is in every essence a global citizen championing a cause that transcends boundaries, caste, religion and geography.”
Our first glimpse of the film came in the form of a motion poster that featured Reem Shaikh as Malala with an open book holding up a war-torn building in her hand. While we watch the building be destroyed, we can hear Kabir Bedi’s powerful voice in the background saying, “This is about those times when the Taliban was destroying Pakistan and Afghanistan in the name of Jihad and religion. When from a very small village in Pakistan, a voice arose.” The poster speaks volumes about Malala’s awe-inspiring bravery and determination to fight for education and peace. The poster also reads, "One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world."
After that memorable motion poster, we got a deeper look at the film with the teaser. This video also features Kabir Bedi voiceover along with a conversation between Malala and her mother about the true meaning of her name. As we listen to the narration, we get a look at the atrocities inflicted by the Taliban on the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Malala Yousafzai true story began in 2012 when spoke out publicly on behalf of girls and their right to learn through her blog about her life in the Swat valley under the Taliban regime for BBC Urdu. This made her a target of the Taliban, due to which she, along with two other girls, was shot by a masked gunman on her school bus. The gunman fled the scene and the Taliban later said it had carried out the attack because she promoted liberalism. Speaking up about the attack and staying firm on her beliefs, her efforts got her worldwide recognition and admiration.
