When Colt wakes up in the hospital, he is alone. The beeping echoes in the otherwise bare hospital room.
Where are his brothers? The few times he has woken up in similar positions, his brothers are always there.
A nurse comes in to unhook the medical equipment. They remove whatever is down his throat and say things to him but their words float away.
They leave him shortly after.
Jody comes in hours later, just before the end of visiting hours. She looks like she walked off a set, probably did now that he thinks about it.
She looks grim as she sits in the chair by his bed.
“Where is Ryland?” Is the first thing he asks. Her face falls even more.
No. No no no no. Something is wrong. His brothers, his twin, should be here.
If he’s not, then…
“He has been missing for months. Your brother can’t even find him.”
Ryland, his brother, the sweet school teacher, was missing. Gone. Something in his soul knew it. That bone deep feeling that screamed at him.
Twin telepathy or whatever. He never really believed in it but somehow through everything, they always did know when the other was in trouble.
Ryland knew when Colt was hurt before he got the call from the studio. Every. Single. Time. Colt knew something was wrong even before he got the call from NASA about Mark. It’s like he felt his own brothers heart shattering from cities away.
“Mark isn’t dead.” Are the next words that leave Jody’s mouth.
Rylands screaming cries ring in his ears. The way he had to pry his brother’s hands away from his own face and neck and the tracks of red his nails had already left there.
The way he didn’t leave him for days, fearing exactly what his twin would do if he left his side for even a second. The phantom pressure of his and Courts combined effort to keep their brother upright during the funeral.
The whole world tilts on its axis and Colt is left scrambling for purchase.
