ENDGAME SPOILERS

here’s why i think steve’s arc completion is perfect.

Everyone saying that him going back sort ot destroyed his arc but i disagree. In first avenger he deals with being a hero and sacrificing his life and the life he could have had with peggy for the greater good. In avengers and the winter soldier he deals with this choice, he understands what it’s like to live in a new world where everything you have is not here anymore. In age of ultron he finally understood that the person he was in the 1st avenger has died, he no longer fancy family and a normal life BUT in civil war he has a glimpse of it when he acknowledges that bucky is not the winter soldier anymore but bucky,his bucky, the only anchor to his original life and self. In civil warhe lives the conflict of being captain america, the man he became atthe end of aou, the man made of honor and rules AND the man he was before, emotional and flawed that has a temper. By the end of civil war when he leaves the shield, he leaves behind what the whole “man if the nation” meant. He decided that he was gonna live according to his moral, his choices and these choices are made by following his instincts and emotions, not rules like captain america used to do. With the loss of infinity war he now struggles even more because he got rid of captain america AND lost. He lost not only bucky but everyone, he feels like he failed because after civil war he did what he feels was right and not what he knew was right. Atthe beginning of endgame he keeps saying that everyone should move on but he can’t because he still thinks that it is his fault (because again he decided to do what he felt right and not what he knew was right following rules and everything) and once he sees tony with a family he realizes that tony has moved on, he’s now happy and is living the life he always wanted. This makes steve hesitant bc he has by now stopped fancing his life with peggy since she’s dead and he “lost his chance” to have a normal life with her. BUT when tony arrives with the time travel solution, steve gets a glimpse of hope. When they go back to the 1970 this glimpse gets even more real and plausible and starts to wonder what would happen if he stays. Going to the end of endgame and with tony’s death, steve realizes that tony had the life he wanted but couldn’t live it because he sacrificed it to save everyone else’s. That’s why he decides to stay with peggy, to live the life he always wanted since the first movie, even if he lost hope at some point and eventually forgot about it. He did it to live the life tony would have lived with pepper and morgan. He did that for himself and tony too.
