Hungary's very long three weeks

Yesterday and today, I said goodbye to my friends, like I do every week, but then I had to stop for a moment, because I realized, that the next time we meet, just 3 or 4 days from now, will feel like a lifetime passed and will be in a completely different world, at least for us. Probably. Never toast in advance, but despite shaking from the nerve more than ever, knocking on every wood nearby, I have to say, we are all sure now that tomorrow we are saying good bye to a regime.

But it's not the elections I want to talk about right now, but the surreal feeling of a day that seemed to be lifetimes away finally arriving. That not just seemed to never come, but ends something that to me, was eternal. I imagined it many times, not knowing how it will go, and then, in the last few months, as it started to shape into form, I saw in my mind where I will be, what I will wear and what I will do. But it still felt so away, and then two months ago my professor joked that our May lessons may have a different topic than planned, and then two weeks ago we laughed with my best friends how the next time we meet we will have a different government, and then yesterday as the trolley doors were closing in front of my schoolmate, I had to shout after him that see you on Tuesday in a different country.

To be a scientist here for a moment, I feel ontological insecurity. Because how do you end 16 years of a solid block of politics and culture in just one day? That's crazy. The Sun rises the next morning as always, but how do we continue? Beyond surreal to me how this is happening to us, right now. This marathon is coming to an end, and god, I can't express how happy I am. Two years ago I posted a toast here, and I thought that's the craziest it will get, and then the mad run didn't end, it just got worse, in the best sense.

It was such a long two years. Such a long four years. Such a long sixteen years. I wish to start gathering different memories now.

Because this time it's so easy, they heard about the brutal Iranian regime enough. Just a few years ago they were siding with the oppressed women of Iran protesting for their rights. Surely they won't turn this around into a "women actually have a ton of rights in Iran and aren't made by a deadly force to cover up, it's just a CIA campaign" this time, just to protest their own government because they are incapable of protesting in a not morally pure white way. I'm sure they know they can stand up against this illegal attack without laughing into the faces of survivors.
