women’s experiences of sexual objectification can lead to a self-objectification which diminishes our interoceptive awareness. interoception is the awareness of bodily sensations – that’s hunger, pain/discomfort, sexual pleasure, etc.. when we internalize objectification, objectify ourselves, it disposes us to disordered eating, depression, sexual dysfunction, and more. 

it’s impossible to list all the ways in which women dismiss our physical cues throughout our days and lives – from eating food we don’t like and not eating food we do, to wearing clothes that are too restrictive, to consenting to sexual acts that we don’t enjoy. and there are even more extreme instances; the consequences of muted interoceptive awareness can be not only traumatic but deadly.

it’s essential that we cultivate an attunement to our own bodies, and it’s so hard… our interoception is thwarted from a very young age. we have to relearn how to attend to our hunger, our pain, our pleasure. we all need to be seen, mirrored, affirmed in our experiences, including our physical sensations. if we don’t do that for ourselves in these bodily experiences, no one else will (we are the only ones in our bodies). but if we do, and we make this attendance a practice, we’ll create space for other women to do it as well.
