"The post-and-beam residence is a spare, horizontal box that is lifted pavilion-like off the ground. Built for a family of five, the rectangular house is divided into three sections. The kitchen is the center core, dividing the living areas and the private bedrooms. Bathrooms are located at the corners of the plan." LA Conservancy

One of the most livable looking modern houses I’ve seen in a while.

Richard Neutra – Kronish house (1955)

Primed to be demolished in 2011, the Kronish house was saved later during the year by a private Greek investor and remains on its lot to this date.

Usually with Neutra’s work I am first attracted by the aesthetic overlook and then the structural and environmental details. Here the lack of available photos (although taken by Julius Shulman) shifts my focus on the huge entrance patio and the green areas placed around the house. By only looking at the layout you can imagine how much presence the outdoors have when looked from the inside.

Let’s hope that the Kronish house has been rewarded with considerate renovation and a good owner looking after its 6,891 square feet. (If you’re willing to see the vulgar state of the house & lot in the early 2011, have a look at these photos)

There's something that appeals to me in this house. Either it's the massing and proportion between the roof and floor-to-ceiling windows, because as a whole, I don't think the house looks anything spectacular. The view and house look beautiful together from certain angles, but especially the wide and open front yard is too exposed to my taste. The neutraesque wings (shown in the first and last photo) look terrific.

There are so many things right with Haus Rang. It's a good example of an aesthetically beautiful house that has floor to ceiling windows without looking like a see-through glass house. In fact, it fits its surroundings so well you couldn't tell if it had always been a part of the nature. Inside, it really looks like a home. It is a bit messy, the study is extruding and the furniture isn't all matchy-matchy and yet all looks so right. I wonder if the couple in the pictures have lived there ever since it was built (edit. seems so). At least I would have.

Now that it's official and I'm living in the World's Design Capital of 2012, Helsinki, I might dedicate few posts to Finnish architecture.

First of all, one has to understand that we have very challenging climate; cold winters and hot summers combined with chilly springs and wet autumns pose difficulties to architects. California-like glass walls and thin flat roofs are simply impossible here. You could probably compare Finland to Canada in terms of climate yet we have more fluctuations between humid and dry during winters.

In this post I'll show some images of Tapiola, with many buildings designed by one of my favorite Finnish architects, Aarne Ervi. Tapiola is a borough in the city of Espoo, a neighbour to Helsinki.

John Lautner – Sheats/Goldstein Residence (1963)

What I love most is Goldstein's will to cultivate the house that must be expensive to maintain. Too many great houses from the last century either have been demolished or treated badly.
