Azul smiled brightly up at him. She’d never really been on a ship before was almost captured by one but it was be different because she was in a human form. “Sure, I’d love to stay in the ship! It would be very interesting and you can show me around. Come on let’s go!” Azul was rather excited for this and helped pick up some wood. “You only come out there? No one in the crew helps you out ?”

Smee couldn’t help the grin throw a twinkle to his eyes as she agreed so readily. The pirate picked up a few manageable logs and started toward the row boat. “Yeah, well, everyone on the ship’s got a job to do or a place to be. Most of the men are in O’Sullivans, but they’ve got a place.” He chuckled, loading the wood into the boat and then heading back to the forest. He pulled a hand axe from the holster on his hip, and started chopping away at a fallen tree.

She would normally take her some time to find shelter but she was till cold at night. Being a human was very different from anything. “Yes I am, I am okay. Well it takes a little longer to find a warm place and most of the caves are warm for a moment then get a little colder the later it gets. “ She smiled. “But it’s  different being a human, it’s much colder.” She thought maybe she sounded so silly saying it “Oh, I hope I’m not keeping you from something.” She placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.

Smee looked down at her hand on his shoulder and then back at her with a little grin. “Yeah? Well, how about you help me collect some wood, and then you come back to the ship with me and stay warm there? I’m sure the captain won’t mind a bit.” Smee spoke, self assured. In reality, he knew that the captain would be infuriated if he brought someone aboard without first discussing with him. “Come on, it’ll be better than being out here by yourself all night. Island gets colder when the sun goes, I promise you that.”

Azul watched closely, trying to take notes in her head. That way she could make one on her own when she had the chance again. She smiled at him and then at the little fire. “I’ve been walking alone for quiet some time my jolly sailor bold.” She looked at him and winked and bit her bottom lip from smiling too much. “Sparrow comes every now and then but she’s been gone too. She’s stuck in her very own world. It’s just me,” She shrugged her shoulders. “Oh What about you? Are you here alone too? Getting wood for your Captain?” She looked over at the wood then to him. She had misses seeing his face, he was such an interesting human being but wasn’t sure why she was so liked him so much. Maybe it was human feelings rubbing off on her.

Smee warmed when she called him her jolly sailor, and couldn’t help but grin at her. It had been a couple weeks since he was young again, today being his first time in what felt like a month. The ache in his old bones had been ironed out, and here he was, feeling like she was the reason for his youth. “Yes, just getting some logs for his fire. It’s been a cold month, alright,” Smee chuckled rubbing the back of his neck. “You’re…you’re out here all on your own? Are you okay?” He asked, wanting to sweep her up and take her back to the ship with him right then and there.

The problem was that Azul wasn’t letting the fire breath so much, it was hard to get the wood going with it being smothered with leafs and woods, it needed a passage way for air to pass through it. Azul looked around for quick second and held up her hand towards the piled up wood and closed her eyes and tried to focus on lighting it up but she needed darker power for such thing but of course it was worth a shot if you were so cold.  She sat down on grown and she did everything Sparrow said but why wasn’t it working. She felt her heart starting to beat a little faster than usual and right when she turned around that person was here, the one she would have long talks with. She smiled and nodded. “I’ve tried to start one of these fires and I’ve done everything, like the wood and leafs and it still doesnt want to start am I missing something?” She turned to look at the fire wood.

Smee chuckled good naturedly and bent down to help out, setting the couple of logs he’d collected on the ground. “You’ve got too much on it,” he told her, pulling a couple of smoking leaves off of the flame that was struggling to burst into existence. “Build a little pyramid,” he told her, picking up the twigs and balancing them up in a triangular shape. The pirate reached into his back pocket and pulled out a little leatherbound booklet, and tore a blank piece out. He crumpled it up and settled it in between the sticks, and then lit the paper with a gold cigarette lighter. Smee then leaned forward, hands pressing into the dirt of Neverland, and blew gently on the little flame. It soon took, and he added bigger pieces of wood. “There, no you’ve just got to make sure it doesn’t burn out.” Sean looked around them, wondering if he had time to build her a little fireplace for it, and then just turned to smile at her. “What’re you doing out here on your own?” He asked, half hoping that she was alone.

Azul always went away from the Winter and swam to a warmer part of the Island strange enough sounded very weird but it was way below the water. But Azul wanted to see the little flakes that fell from the sky they were cold and oddly shaped and she wanted to stay above to see it all. Of course her friend had left her some clothes, warm for this type of weather. Azul had been out in land for a day, she’d wanted to stay for as long as she could above the water and hopefully the moon would be so kind enough to let her see the snow fall. Azul had warm boots, long pants and a long sleeve shirt. She looked human enough. Sparrow would often go away and she’d had to learn how to be out here in the world and to fend for herself and she never got into that much trouble ever, she was the sweetest. Azul had been walking the path Sparrow had taught her everything looked strangely weird, colors changing in the leaves and not that many animals out. Azul was started to get cold and saw a few times how Sparrow made a fire, she needed wood leaves to get it started and so she did. Gathered it all but just sat there wondering how to get it on. She knew she carried the little light with her but other times she’d use the sticks. She sat up and tried to get it started but got frustrated. “Oh please little flame come on.” She wrapped her hair in a messy bum trying her hardest to get it started.

Smee made his way over to the island to get some firewood. The captain had been on his ass all day about how cold his cabin had become after the chill that swept over Neverland. The coldness meant one thing: Pan was away from the island. It put a brisk disposition in the captain, and made him more irritable than ever. Sean was bundled up the best he could be; a vest over a navy blue flannel shirt and his famous red hat pulled down over his ears. He rowed to shore and tugged the longboat up a bit on the beach, not wanting to risk a bunch of mermaids untying it from the dock like they’d done the last time he’d set foot on the isle. The pirate hoped this would be a quick trip; he just had to find some dry logs to bring back to the Roger. If he could just warm Hook’s quarters, he was sure the captain would be in better form. As he started collecting logs to toss in the boat, he could smell the faint scent of smoke and the murmur of someone trying to coax a fire out of some wood. The voice was familiar, like a dream of a dream, and he followed it to the owner. “Hello,” he breathed when he saw Azul, the ethereal beauty from the seas he’d met months back. “Having trouble?” He asked, in his kindest voice.

“Aye I’m here,” She opened the door smiling at the Irishman. “Would you like to come in?” She held the door open. “What brings you all the way out here?” She asked. She went over to the pot and stirred it. “Can I get you a drink?” She smiled up at him. She had a few lanterns glowing so she could see inside the home. “Is the Captain in need of food already?” She laughed not realizing that she had probably hit the nail on the head, merely attempting at humor. She straightened. “Will you stay for supper?”

“Oh, I would love a drink if you have it,” Smee stated with his impish grin, though he immediately regretted it. The only alcohol she was apt to have was from the Roger, which would mean Smee was taking away some of her rations. “Just water’s fine. It’s a bit of a hike here,” he gave a raspy chuckle, raking a hand through his dark brown locks. “Eh, yeah actually. He’s asked for corn if you have any yet, but I think he was just tired of my hovering. What’re you having?” Smee asked, considering it for a moment before realizing that she might not have much in the way of food. He looked over to the pot she had stirred and suddenly felt ridiculously hungry. He gave another laugh, feeling slightly uneasy about being alone with her after his chat with her father. With Robert suddenly on his mind, Smee straightened up a bit and started talking again. “Oh, yer da mentioned something about willow bark for my arthritis,” he told her. “Obviously I don’t need it right now, but for future reference,” he gave yet another light hearted chuckle. “Don’t suppose you know where I can get my hands on some?”

“The men are listless, we haven’t taken a prize in a while. Though Starkey should be more on those men. He can only do so much.” He sighed. “Though I will say they seem to work harder when Starkey is on duty or the Captain is out among them.” He sighed. “How about you when you aren’t young how is your back? Artemis recommends willow bark for when you have arthritis. Apparently medicine has advanced a bit more.” He took a sip finishing off his mug. He looked at Smee. “Hungry? I seem to remember some cookies were made not too long ago.”

Smee nodded along about Starkey. He knew that the other pirates got a little anxious when they didn’t have fresh blood or booty to look forward to, and figured that it added to the laziness. After all, what had the Captain had them do lately that was at all what they signed up for? Sean quickly pushed the feelings away, feeling immediately guilty for thinking poorly of their Captain. “Oh, does she? I’ll have to take her up on that. Any idea where I could acquire some willow bark, Rob?” Smee asked, rubbing at his knuckles instinctively. At the mention of cookies, Smee frowned, slipping out of the booth and wandering around the supplies. “Cookies? Is Cookson mad? We don’t have that sort of supplies, do we? Surely an extravagant, silly indulgence. I’ll have to talk to the Captain about this,” Smee stated, a crease down his furrowed brow.

Not So Alone || Artemis & Smee

Artemis sat by the fire she had started she was crocheting a blanket for herself it was coming along smoothly. She hummed listening to the crackle of the flames on the wood. She watched the door occasionally. The Farmboy lived in a separate cabin all his own. However he was to check on her occasionally. Save that she had sent him to go get wood and he would be gone for the majority of the day. She had a stew on the fire with chicken spices and dried prunes to be added then it would be served over rice. There was a knock on the door and she stood going to it.

Sean pulled the longboat up the shore and tied it to the pier. The captain was looking for some fresh vegetables for dinner, which seemed more like a ruse to get Smee off his back. He’d been hanging around James, fretting over making him more comfortable. Hook had backhanded him when he tried to help him get his trousers off for bed, and told him to go get some corn or something for the next evening’s supper. Smee trudged through the Neverland until he got to the Blythe’s farm, and wandered up to the door, sighing from the long walk, and wishing he’d brought a cigarette. “Are ye in there, Artemis?” Smee asked after he knocked on the door.

“Provided my little shit of a farmhand hasn’t ruined things. Everything should be good.” Little shit was a term of endearment in this usage. “She will be running things.” He nodded. “That boy had best keep his eyes and hands off of her.” He sighed. “Though with the weather that Neverland has likely had things probably aren’t growing as well as they could. “How are you Smee? Hope the Captain hasn’t been too demanding of you.”

Smee nodded like he understood the anger of a father. “Well, if he does, you can always cut his hands off and sew them back on like Noodler, poor sod,” Sean chuckled, not really knowing the real reason behind the man’s double hand transplant. “Oh, are they not? That’s a shame,” Smee ducked his head, feeling a little selfish. He always liked fresh food aboard the ship, but he knew that he should be worried about other things than his stomach; the Captain was always in a terrible mood when things went wrong. But when Robert brought up James, Smee instinctively went on the defense. “Oh no, the Captain’s never too demanding for me,” the old pirate piped in. “In fact, he should be more demanding. The amount of laziness I see in one afternoon aboard this ship is scandalous. I see some pirates just standing around watching people to see if they’re doing something worse than they are, and that just…” Smee shook his head, wracking his brains for the right word. “That just seems a bit pointless, really, doesn’t it?”

Robert pulled out a folded paper and showed Smee a list of varying classes that Artemis took over the years. Everything from History to English, Other languages, to Sword and gun usage. “It wasn’t a normal school but they have the biggest library my girl could get her hands on.” He sipped his coffee. “She also loved her classes. According to her report card, she passed with flags flying.” He smiled with pride. “That’s my girl.”

Smee gave an impressed smile, but couldn’t help feeling a little bored. It wasn’t anything Robert was doing wrong, but Smee always found himself bored when people talked about their kids. It was a bad habit, but he tended to tune people out when they did. The Irishman attempted to stay interested, however, and nodded at what Blythe said. “That’s good. It’s good to hear kids still enjoy learning.” He grinned, finishing off his tea. “How’s your farm doing?” Smee asked, getting up to put the kettle back on for another cup of tea.

Queenie lay spread out on the bed, eyes pinched shut because it was late in the day and the sunlight was irritating her. She’d been awake for a while, she didn’t know how long, but she’d heard lots of hustle and bustle from the pirates she’d somehow allowed herself to call home. Part of that hurt. Her fingers scrunched in the sheets and she rolled herself over, pushing herself to her knees and resting her hands between her thighs. She pushed her hands back through her hair, taming it to the point of standard, and pulled on a pair of ‘leggings’ that she’d been given on their latest trip. They’d travelled, but she didn’t really see anything, just the docks. She didn’t bother with anything else, the baggy top she wore was fine and she didn’t have the willpower to put any effort in anyway. Queenie padded out of the cabin and frowned at the sky, instead went to the galley for a drink. She took water, though she could have easily gone whiskey. Queenie left straight after, unsure if the men staring at her chest made her feel better or worse. Wanted like a mermaid? Maybe. She paused aimless in the middle of the deck, nothing to do, nowhere to go except back to bed, she turned to head that way. She even made it to the door, and she felt idiotic for feeling a twinge of pride for leaving the cabin for five minutes. Her forehead rested on the wood, it’s solidity made her feel better, but her eyes closed and she felt a burning in her throat threatening tears, turning the handle to go inside and hide until James turned up.

Sean had been mending clothes and avoiding Hook all morning. The Captain had been in a grumpy disposition, and Smee couldn’t help but feel that a killing would take place soon. He was well aware that James Hook tolerated him well enough, but he didn’t want to push his luck when the man was in one of his moods. After making sure that Hook was off giving orders somewhere far away from his cabin, Smee whistled his way across the deck and into the darkened hall toward Hook and Queenie’s chambers, patched clothing in tow. He stopped short when he saw the blonde beauty that had kept the Captain’s interest longer than he’d seen in some time leaning against the door. He considered just turning around and coming back later. Smee scratched lazily at his gray beard, wondering if she was feeling alright; generally leaning against doors silently meant one or more of a few things: exhaustion, headache, lost in deep thought, or forgetting a key. He finally decided to speak up, his train of thought lasting about three seconds between when he saw her and had stopped. “Alright, Queenie?” Smee asked; they hadn’t really talked too much since her arrival, but he knew who she was, and he assumed she knew him; the captain had thrown his shoe (or various objects within reaching distance) at him while she was in the room.

“Oh aye and don’t get me started on what is underneath those stares. Thoughts that if brought to the light would send me on a murdering spree no doubt.” he shook his head. “I know she is lovely.” He pulled out a locket and showed Smee a picture. “Her mother was too. Oh and keep an eye on her I will but if she makes her decisions she will and live with the consequences. However I know that some men would hurt her and not take no for an answer. However she did learn to use guns, swords and other weapons. She isn’t exactly a sitting duck.” He sipped from his cup of coffee.

Smee just nodded, keeping his comments neutral. He reached out gently to touch the locket to steady it so that he could make out the picture better. “Ah, she was a beauty, Robert,” Sean commented, raising his mug of tea up in admiration before taking another sip. “I’m sure that Artemis can defend herself well; as you’ve said, she’s not a sitting duck. I’m sure she’s tough.”

“She is more than capable I saw her school lessons over the years list.” Robert admitted. “However it still makes me worry. I think that is just a part of my being her Father.” He sipped the coffee and looked up at Smee. “It still doesn't help that I want to beat a man for looking at her. What can I do about that I feel like I will snap and I worry especially as to who I snap at.” He looked back down at the coffee mug and swished it around before drinking more.

Smee just nodded again at Robert’s words; he didn’t have much to say on the father department. It made him feel too much shame. Ashamed of what he might have had, had he stayed in Kerry. He might have been a father ten times over, and had something of use to add to the conversation. He took another sip of tea and set his cup down with a clink. “Well, Robert, you can’t stop a man from looking at her. Especially with her figure; you did happen to notice in all of this, that your daughter is a damn fi—” Sean stopped himself there and shook his head. “She is quite pretty, you know,” he shrugged. “I’d say she’s old enough to make her own decisions. But you can be sure that I’ll keep an eye out for her, if you’d like.”

“You could give me a penny that is all they are worth, but a cup is just as nice.” He sat down and looked at him. “I worry for my Daughter. She is all grown up and I see how the men leer at her. It takes all my strength not to kill a man when he looks at her wrong.” He sighed. “However I know she can take care of herself, it was no ordinary boarding school I sent her too. She knows her way around a pistol or knife perhaps better than I do. I’ve seen her take her revolver apart and put it back together she cleans it every day.” He looked at him. “It still doesn’t help seeing them stare lustfully at her like she is a piece of meat in a pretty dress.”

Smee nodded in an understanding manner, though he had nothing to compare to what Robert was going through. He’d never admit it, but even he had gazed at the girl as she walked into a room, eyes fixating on every curve on her, and wondered how he might be able to bed her. But he decided to keep that bit to himself, and just nodded again. “I’d say you shouldn’t worry; she sounds like quite the capable young thing, but I understand it’s not something you can switch off.” Smee gave a sympathetic smile and took a sip of his tea, thumbing the rim in thought.

Robert was once more the Quartermaster of the Roger. He was willing for now to pay the price it got his daughter what she wanted. She had returned now. He felt his age especially when looking at her. She looked like him and her mother exactly. She was lovely, it made him fearful. He knew how the men aboard felt about women and he flet the need to protect her. He knew she could handle herself. Still….

Smee was fixing himself a cuppa in the galley when he spied a thoughtful looking Blythe. He made another cup, seeing as it was just the two of them, and meandered over to the gentleman. “Evening, Robert,” he greeted with a warm smile on his young face, holding out the teacup to the man. “Cuppa for your thoughts?” He asked, nodding to the empty booth.

It was full blue moon and now it was time to head back to the sea, she missed it. The way the ocean caressed her skin, It had made her  such a perfect glow but  felt like it was going away. In her mind she couldn’t think of only being human, not being able to be a part of the sea.. The sound of it was bitter but then again she would have a reason to stay on the earth but all of that was out of her mind. She had explored the wonders of the world above. She’d visit Sparrow and go on adventures but she did miss her friend and felt like he might of forgotten about her, she had stop mentioning about him to Sparrow because she made it a bigger deal then it was. Azul walk down to the Lagoon taking her time, step by step. Once the mermaid was very close she started taking off most of the human things Sparrow gave her, belts to hold things, satchel and unlacing things they called shoes from her feet.She sat down over looking the  reflection of the moon in the water. Maybe she could stay one more day above or was this the last time she’d ever visit the world above. She wanted so much more adventure, Neverland had adventure but she needed more. Azul kicked off her shoes set them aside and started unbuttoning her blouse, humans wore so much at a time. 

Sean wiped the sweat from his brow and propped his foot on the hull of the dinghy he was in, leaning forward on his knee. It had been a long day for fishing, and he’d finally gotten a break long enough to break a sweat and pull the nets in. McGee sighed, looking out as the sun was setting, and wondered just what he was going to do with his life. Sure, life on the sea was a grand experience, but so much of the adventure had streamed out of it. He thought often of the lady of the sea after her existence was brought to his attention again by a spritely little lost thing, and some days, found himself smiling through his work. Smee brought his attention to the darker storm clouds in the distance and thought he might have time to nip in and collect some fruit for a bit of supper when he got back; there was no doubt that Cookson probably wouldn’t make sure that there was food set aside for him. The tide pushed him in toward the lagoon and he decided he might as well dock there for a quick outing. It was then that he saw her, like a goddess sitting by the water in a dream. Azul. “Ahoy, there!” he called out, noting that she was starting to undress, not wanting to frighten her by silently rowing in on her while she was in the nip.
