I was in a beginner’s fiction writing class once and we read a Borges piece to interpret and discuss and my interpretation was that he was describing the kind of weird mental state writers can wind up in where we mine everything –everything– for material. So, I’ll be filled with immense grief or joy or fear or what have you, and at the same time there’s this little disassociated piece of myself going “oh, so this is what x feels like, ok. What’re the physical sensations? What are the thoughts like? etc. etc” and analysing my experiences as they happen and figuring out how I’d put them into a narrative. I described it as having this omnipresent voyeur inside of one’s experience. And, other than our professor, no-one else at all got or could relate to what I was saying, except for a classmate who was an actor, who felt himself doing the exact same thing.

I'd love some advice about how to follow a plotline throughout a longer fic. I feel like outlines don't work for me, I write best when I just go with the flow. But that leaves my fics a little.... bumpy, as far as plot. As in, the story might randomly change directions at any given point.

The course of true love never did run smooth, and the path to a good story always has bumps.

That's why professional authors write draft after draft of their works. Often times, the final product barely resembles the first draft because some of those random directions end up being more interesting than others so the interesting ones get followed and the other ones get dropped.

Let yourself have bumps. There's no shame in that. And if you want to smooth them out, then you can go back in again and edit. Or get a beta to help you out.

The harder part of writing is getting to done. Once you find your ending, going back and revising the path to get there is a lot easier. You'll have a better idea of which of those random offshoots is actualyl important. You'll know which parts need to stay in and which parts it's okay to remove. Going back through when you've got a first draft done shows you all the little threads that you left dangling and all of the knots that you need to cut away.

Or just post what you have, bumps and all. Creations are always worth loving, perfection not required.

All of this! Let your first draft be as bad as it needs to be to get it done and then go back and shape it into what you want it to be.

This is why I never post true WIPs anymore. I never start posting until it’s fully written and has at least one round of beta input and editing. Sometimes I’m still banging the dents out of the later chapters, but I have to be sure there won’t be big structural changes before I start posting.

Things I have realized a fic needed a few chapters in that required me to later go back and edit previous chapters, making me glad I hadn’t posted anything yet:

A new side character with their own minor subplot

A new major OC who now has her own POV chapters, including the first chapter of the fic

A framing device that starts each chapter to help with worldbuilding

You’ve heard the advice to start your story as late as possible? Often I need to write some of the background/previous stuff to find my way into the fic but then need to edit it out so the story starts at the meaty bit

I often don’t figure out “what the fic is about” in terms of major themes (even if I know the plot) until a few chapters in, or even after betaing

That said, obviously like ao3cotd said, you don’t have to do this if you prefer posting as you go for motivation etc. But for me, I find writing to be much more fulfilling when I’m happy with the final product. I like writing fics that I can reread over and over without thinking “oh I should’ve done this or that,” and I need a lot of editing to get them to that point. It’s all about finding the process that’s most fulfilling to you!

“There’s no way you’re playing tomorrow.” Kevin’s mouth is so close to Jean’s ear that he feels the words being spoken into his neck and tenses. 

“There’s no way I’m not,” Jean says and feels Kevin pull back from where his lips are brushing against the skin.

He speaks slowly, as if Kevin is particularly hard on the uptake. “Or Moreau, for that matter. He’s an idiot, but even he’s not stupid enough to go gossiping to the press. I just need him for the drills, so be a good boy and fetch him for me, please.”
