At the beginning of the year you had ideas, plans, expectations, and goals about where and what you were going to do this year. Now, just a few short months later the world has dramatically changed. I’ve been recently searching for vintage aviation materials, books, letters, photographs, etc. and came across this little book titled: A Spiritual Almanac for Service Men. It was printed in 1943-44 only and given to all service men as a part of their uniform during WWII. It’s a pretty fascinating little book design to be a pocket sized beacon of hope for very young men sent off to the war of the World. Interesting how some it feels so relevant now- considering our time. (Also, Happy Easter.) Personal update: I’ve been working so much lately I haven’t been able to do much flying and the plane was down for some repairs too. Finally got a chance to take a nice long cruz yesterday. The plane is back in top shape and I recently got a new noise canceling headset with Bluetooth that connects to my phone. So, I can cruz around listening to my tunes. It’s pretty crazy to be flying out of an international airport with not another single aircraft in the air. No helicopters, no commercial flights... nothing. I chatted with the air traffic controller for like 10 mins., which is completely not allowed in normal circumstances. I asked him how many planes are coming into Kona daily now. He said, 15 to 20 tops. And I asked how many of those were cargo planes and he said most of them. One maybe two planes a day coming in with passengers and they’re completely empty. It was wild flying over all the empty beaches and empty roads. But, it was pretty relaxing. I don’t mind that all the tourists are gone and the sky is empty. Felt pretty good to be the only plane in the air around the whole island. Flying has definitely become one of my favorite things. Watching sunset while flying over the ocean makes my life feel complete. I was flying home at the end of 2008 from South Africa on an empty plane reading a long article about the housing bubble. I remember having a feeling... this isn’t going to end well. This is going to impact #metoo... I came home and fought to keep my commercial photography business alive as the economy failed. It sort of worked, but officially ended for me a few years later. An advertising agency lied to me and used my work illegally and I lost $500,000 worth of bids/contracts and another agency was 120 days late on the final 15k payment they owned me. I was over it. Fuck advertising. I had lost. I got my last checks. Sold everything and took a year off- I went back to school for agricultural business and welding. I started a welding business. Did landscaping. And moved to Hawaii... have started a few businesses here. One thing has stuck with me since 2008 thou... I was never going to let an economic tide screw me again. I saw it and felt it when I graduated in 2003 (a major down turn). I barely got a job working for Mark Dayton in the United States Senate at graduation. I remember clearly the woman who welcomed me saying, “You should feel lucky you got this job.” me saying, “I do. But, why do you say that?” her saying, “450 people applied for your job. Mark liked your essay.” 😧 And I basically lost everything 10 years ago. I’ve been preparing for this time ever since. I obsessively thought about ways in which a downturn could play out in my favor when it happened again. Guess what? Here we are. And guess what? I’m going to have a good year. But, here’s my hope- I want you to seize this moment! While everyone else is getting drunk and feeling bad for themselves- build a new business. While everyone else is spending 15 hours a day on social media- make your art for 70 hours a day. This is the exact moment to transcend fear. Become the Phoenix. I have done this. I will do it again. Face your greatest fear and rise. Now is the time for you to level up and become a better version of yourself. Are you ready? Also, it’s nearly statistically impossible you’re going to die now. Perhaps the one book I’ve read in the last 5 years or so that most accurately predicted and explains our current free-fall... is this book. Anti-fragile. In a nutshell- we live in the most highly connected and highly efficient time in human history. However, efficiency is extremely fragile. Right now, less than 1% of humans produce 100% of our global food supply. That’s mind blowing efficiency. However, it’s also extremely fragile. If anything... throws that off. Let’s say a global pandemic... boom. 99.9% of humans are in big trouble. If you’re bored, confused, scared, etc. etc. read this book. And consider how fragile you really are. Also, not really communicated in this book, but correlates is emotional fragility. Frankly speaking we’re living in a time of peak emotional fragility. People- your specific individual life can be better from now until you die. However, the curve of humanity is on the downfall. It’s time to understand realism. Our species is entering its decline. But, you can prosper. Chose wisely. By understanding the truth vs. what you wish then future to be- becomes your future. Living in highly dense cities- very efficient. Also- very dangerous. Example: NYC in a pandemic. Small town Idaho is much safer. Less efficient. Less interesting. Much safer.
