HOKU-SENSEI!!
日: “It’s good to be back. Hope you didn’t miss me too much.”

日: Hiroku froze, surprised that his ‘victim’ responded at all. Who could blame Hiroku for needing somebody to talk to? Being stationed out here could be such a drag. It was just an easy way to pass time, really.
But this was the first time his ‘conversation’ partner had responded. Embarrassment was the next feeling that hit him, like a fully-loaded truck. “I--...” he trailed off, unsure of how he could even start to deal with this situation. He’d just vented on and on about his work and love problems... and apparently, the guy had heard all of it.
How unsightly for an officer of his standing... This wasn’t the Academy-- he couldn’t be embarrassing himself like this anymore. “Err, the fault is mine, not yours,” he replied, a sheep-like expression creeping onto his face. Awkward... “I didn’t know you could hear. Usually, you guys never react... Hope I didn’t bother you too much.”

“Look man, you’re gonna drop off if you keep pacing like that.” Levanin was sitting at one of the couches and Ryuuhei huffed, putting a hand near his head. Stopping himself, he scowled. The girls would become absolutely furious with him if they had to redo it again and he shook his head.
“It’s not like that. This is Hiroku. This is really happening! I can’t get over that but I can’t stop myself from wanting to shake and throw up.”
He tossed himself onto the couch beside of the man and was handed a small shot glass filled with alcohol.
“Oh… oh no, Levanin, I can’t go to our wedding being drunk!”
“That’s not what I’m saying. A little bit of liquid courage won’t kill you and I’m sure Hoku would understand. Besides, I gotta go get fabulous myself, get my bling and my suit out. You better watch or I’ll end up using my horns on ya.”
Levanin stood and stretched out, leaving the room and Ryuuhei with the shot glass. One gulp and the whiskey burned down his throat, making Ryuuhei’s body warm and his mind calm down. It was just like what he usually had and that helped for what was going on. Of course, the gum he had on the table nearby was going to live hard that day.
Although, hearing Hiroku’s honeyed voice through the door had his nerves softening enough to stand. “Hiroku? I’m surprised they let you out of the room, honestly.” Touching his hair, he could feel the cosmetics used on it and almost rolled his eyes. The girls were certainly not going to be happy if he messed it up.
“Ah. Something like that. I already caused Shinra to throw a fit at me for not sitting still. There might have been a few times I messed it up without realizing but we’ll survive, it’s just hair.” Even though this was their wedding day and Ryuuhei didn’t want to look like a ruffled chicken standing up there.
Putting his hand against the door, Ryuuhei closed his eyes and simply enjoyed the feeling of the other’s presence. It was unintentionally calming, much more so than the alcohol had been. “Hm? Ah, I hadn’t thought so many would come either but it’ll be wonderful sharing this with so many people. They’re our friends. I believe word on the street is we’re truly turtle doves in disguise and I’m having a hard time discrediting that.”
One hand lingered near the door for a moment and he put it back against the wood grain. He had to go by tradition, he could wait…
日: There was the voice he had been yearning for all day. He felt soothed, knowing that Ryuuhei was there-- it comforted him that the other was likely as nervous as he was.
“Mmm, they finished with me pretty quickly. Makes sense that they’d need longer to fix you up,” he teased, the corners of his lips pulling up despite the fact that there was nobody there to see it. “I feel like my face is about to crack,” he groaned. This was his first experience with any kind of makeup-- she had insisted-- no, demanded that Hiroku wear all kinds of soul-king-knows-what... but if he were to be honest, he liked how it looked.
He adjusted his tie, feeling as if it were choking him-- pure nerves, he was sure. Is that really what their friends thought? “Gross...” he answered, unable to find himself in a turtle dove; were they really that touchy-feely? “Then again, here we are... getting married and all. Can’t believe we made it this far-- the Hiroku of when we first met wouldn’t believe it,” he chuckled. “He’d be all ‘Ryuuhei and commitment? You sure?’ and laugh nervously and turn into a second sun with all that blushing and embarrassment.” How the years had changed the two of them...
An inhabitant of the manor walked by, quickly and lightly bowing for Hiroku as he passed, which he returned with a small nod. He doubted he would ever get used to a lot of the formalities that came with his position... “Then again, I doubt Fourth Seat-me would believe a lot of this,” he continued.
“Ugh, just knock me out and wake me up when it starts,” Hiroku moans, pressing himself against the door with renewed force. He doubted he’d survive the remaining hour.
eternal commitment
How many days of meticulous planning had led up to this moment? How many times had he replayed this scenario in his head, scrutinizing every plan until he had settled on a series of events in which nothing could go wrong?
And yet, he remained nervous. Of course, it was completely normal for somebody to be nervous in a situation like this-- he was about to officially dedicate the remainder of his Shinigami life to the man he loved. This was to be the happiest day of his life, solidifying his desire to spend eternity with his partner... No big deal, his voice reverberated in his mind mockingly.
He pulled a box of mints from his pockets, quickly ejecting two and popping them in his mouth. How many had he consumed so far? Perhaps a more minty liquid now flowed through his veins instead of blood; it was his way of taking off some of the edge-- those could have been the fiftieth, or the hundredth-- he had no way of telling.
“You’re free to go,” the friendly lady responsible for his appearance smiled, placing a calming hand on his shoulder. She had picked up on his anxiousness -- you’d have to be blind to miss it -- and had tried to keep his thoughts occupied with small-talk... but to no avail. “You look stunning.” And he felt stunning, too.
A heartfelt thank you came from Hiroku’s lips, before he left the room. Bad omens be damned; he just couldn’t stay cooped up alone with this tension. He took a daring peek at the lobby, housing all who had come to witness the sacred bonding of two Souls-- jeez, did they know that many people altogether? Luckily, they seemed to be enjoying themselves without the grooms’ intervention.
Making his way through the back, away from the festivities, he found the door that separated Hiroku from his soon-to-be-husband. He took a deep breath, pressing his back to it as he steeled his mind, trying to wash away his nerves with calm.
“Hey, Ryuuhei... I’m dying out here, you’ll have to come save me,” he called out, continuing to barricade the door with his body. He didn’t want to see the other groom just yet, saving the other’s striking appearance for the ceremony like a fine dessert. “Can’t believe how much work they had to do on me. Must be worse for you, though, what with your hair and all,” he fretted, starting on a nervous spree of rambling. “There are so many people out there, jeez; can’t believe you invited so many-- you social butterfly.” If he were to guess, the ratio would be about three-to-one.
Although he would have loved to bust down the door to speak to Ryuuhei face-to-face, he restrained himself... for now.

The former Octava isn’t one to be outwardly rude upon first meeting –but this was a unique combination. The majority of other he’d met were brunets. “That is a rather broad question. Though I don’t require assistance at the moment.” A polite nod given before he continued with an introduction. “My name is Szayelaporro Granz.”
日: Hiroku’s irritation subsides as he is greeted; it was much better than being stared at, in any case. “Hiroku Shikuga of the 12th Division,” he answered, mirroring Syazelaporro with a dip of the head of his own.
Now that the pleasantries were over, Hiroku could not help but wonder why he was confronted in the first place. He certainly wasn’t interested in donating his body in the name of science or anything similar, nor would he offer up any of his squad members.
Adjusting his glasses by pinching the temples, he took the initiative: “A pleasure to finally meet you myself. The rumors can hardly hold a candle to you in person.”

“I’m sorry to inform you but your husband has passed. Ryuuhei, I-I thought you knew?” Shin’s countenance had immediately dissolved in front of Ryuuhei’s eyes and the man’s presence no longer mattered. The raw, animalistic scream that had left him felt like razors tearing down his throat but that wasn’t the worst of it.
Identifying the body had been done by another, leaving Ryuuhei to simply wait until the funeral date. That night, after the funeral, he sat on the bed they shared, staring at the last remnant of Hiroku’s reiatsu in his hands; a yellow crystal with a jellyfish inside. For a fleeting moment, he thought it responded to him but Ryuuhei knew better than that.
Silence reigning over their small, shared home made the creaks and groans of the wood so much harder to handle. He should have heard Hiroku’s soft, rhythmic breathing behind him, exhausted from the end of the mission, but that wasn’t to be.
“I should have taken that one,” he murmured to the darkness of the room. Thinking back on it, there was nothing he could do to change the course of the day, they’d both agreed their choices were fit to their fighting styles. Even then, the thought still remained.
Out of the corner of his eye, Ryuuhei noticed a flash of movement and glanced up, seeing a shadow just barely pass by the doorway.
“Hiroku?”
Impossible. When souls were dead, they dissolved into spirit particles and went to the reincarnation cycle. There was no way that Hiroku had made it back home but he still stood and went into the hallway, seeing another flash of darkness near the bend into the stairwell. With his heart pounding, so loud he could hear it as if next to his ear, Ryuuhei lurched for the stairwell.
He followed the dark form into the kitchen and slammed the door open, finding nothing but a dead end and the back door open. The night air was blowing the door to and fro, leaving it to bang against the kitchen counter as he walked out onto the porch.
“Hiroku!”
In the distance, he could see a figure with light pink hair and felt his heartbeat calm. Hiroku’s hair had been that color after training with someone… Ryuuhei never asked and now he regretted not doing so. He stepped forward but paused, red eyes filling with tears as he took a step back instead. “Go rest,” he murmured. “You idiot, you don’t have to check up on me…”

“That’s a half cup of sugar. …Ryuuhei! That’s too much, we have to make it over now!”
“No, we don’t, it’ll just be a little sweet is all.”
Ryuuhei grinned at Hiroku and kissed his nose, going right back to the bowl filled with the batter of their dessert. Cooking together was one of the few things they could do that wasn’t sparring, something of a nice bonding project for them. “You know, Hiro, I’m certain that we can add a bit of vanilla to offset the extra sugar.”
A second later, he licked his finger free of batter and grinned. “Because I’m still going to eat it either way. We’ve gone this far so why not?”
For a moment, the man had a stern look on his face and Ryuuhei thought he would get scolded but only received a shake of his head. “Fine. Next time we make something a little easier. I’m not convinced this is going to turn out right anyway.”
“If not, we can grab some mochi or dango from one of the restaurants in the First District.” Kissing Hiroku’s cheek, Ryuuhei turned away from him in order to put the batter in a pan, sticking it in the oven with a water bath. “Alright, now… the paper says an hour. I’ll start on the steak and fries. Tell me, are you going to stay in uniform all evening or are you going to loosen up and change?”
He caught a gentle swat to his belly and grunted at Hiroku, walking away to change. “That’s the spirit! I wouldn’t mind if you walked around naked though.”
“Ryuuhei!”
“What? It was only a suggestion…”

Eyes this one a while. Silently approving of his appearance.
日: He does his best to remain indifferent towards the staring, but can’t keep quiet forever. “Can I help you?” he quips, minor tones of annoyance present in his voice.
"Just… come back alive, okay?”
日: Just come back alive? How could he ever promise such a thing? They were Shinigami, they both knew that leaving one day could mean he might never return… it was just a part of the job.
Even though he was about to leave, halfway out the door, he stopped to turn to his dear, beloved husband, and slowly walked up to the man he loved, the man Hiroku had sworn to spend the rest of his eternal life with.
“I’ll be back in a fortnight, and not a minute longer,” he promised quietly, bringing his hand up to Ryuuhei’s chip, softly rubbing his husband’s cheek with his thumb. “You know I can take care of myself… I’m more concerned for you, actually; keep out of trouble when I’m gone, hmm?” He tried to flash a wry smile, though he knew it would fall apart at the cracks when scrutinized.
He hoped that some teasing could sooth Ryuuhei’s concerns, but even Hiroku had trouble shaking off a bad premonition that hung over them both. “I’ll be back before you know it.” Leaning in, he brought their lips together in a chaste and quick kiss.
How could he have known that his last words to Ryuuhei were a lie?

“You made me this way.”
“You think I wanted this?!”
“This is all his/her/their fault.”
“I’m not the bad guy.”
“Don’t make me the bad guy here.”
“I’m wasn’t the only one who did it.”
“They framed me and everyone believed. Even you.”
“The things you made me do… I can never forgive you.”
“ I’ll never forgive what you did to me.”
“I only did what I had to!”
“I had to do it to survive.”
“I knew you wouldn’t understand.”
“I needed help and you ignored me.”
“You were there, but all you did was watch.”
“I wasn’t the one who turned their back.”
“You just took in everything they said.”
“You believed every little lie they fed you.”
“You promised to be there for me, but you never were.”
“I needed someone more than ever, and everyone just walked away.”

“you’re just… so, so stupid.”
“you can’t be here now.”
“you look like an accident.”
“you really need to go.”
“you know who to call.”
"zero fucks given. next please.”
Keep in mind that many people have died for their beliefs; it's actually quite common.
The real courage is in living and suffering for what you believe in.
