what 2 do if Ur retarded but nice?
So I know critiquing an authors fic is bad (like if you're complaining that they wrote incest or whatever), however would it be bad if the author is genuinely writing something bigoted but in a way that doesn't seem intentional? Like just leaving a comment saying "hey this is bad because xyz" because genuinely sometimes I think it does help the author especially if they didn't know something was bad. (It certainly helped me anyways)
unless the author specifically asks for feedback/constructive criticism, unsolicited criticism is never welcome in fanfic space in my opinion.
you can absolutely hate a fic or how it’s written, but again, fanfic is not an act of activism. it’s just someone writing for themself as a hobby and you just get to read it. if you don’t agree with how certain things are portrayed and if the author doesn’t specifically ask for criticism, quietly exit the fic.
because if we normalize criticizing fics because it contains topics we personally think are written in poor taste, whether or not it’s intentional, it means other people are more comfortable complaining and criticizing fics in which certain things are written in poor taste in their opinions too.
it’s all subjective and it doesn’t stop at one thing.
my stance will always be: “write whatever you want, however you want. fanfiction is not an act of activism. fanfiction doesn’t have to be morally correct, it doesn’t have give readers a moral lesson. if someone reads it and can’t separate fiction from reality, then their inability to separate fiction from reality is not an artist’s responsibility, because artists are not their parents or babysitters.
unsolicited criticism and censorship have no place in fanfic space/creative freedom. fanfic writers write for themselves and their own enjoyment. they don’t owe anybody anything.”
