Before they left the Hideout, Sukopon warned them that the creatures of the wild were unusually restless. However, Hatapon and the Trifecta believed that Guy would guide them to victory, regardless of the obstacles.
But true to Sukopon's words, what was supposed to be a normal hunt had devolved into a battle of attrition.
Waves of beasts kept coming, chipping away at their stamina. Eventually, Ton, Chin and Kan's movements began to grow sluggish, affecting their reaction time to commands. Even Guy's pike jabs were slowly losing their ferocity. Despite his holy powers as the Almighty, his body was still mortal and suffered exhaustion. Hatapon, whose safety was kept in check by Chin, was the only one still brimming with energy.
After fighting for hours, it seemed as though they would finally reach the end. Hatapon had finally spotted the structure from which the foul creatures kept appearing.
"Come on! Stay in rhythm!" Hatapon waved his flag, "The end is in sight!"
His words appeared to invigorate the four warriors, granting them a second wind for the last leg of their mission.
But as they were nearing the structure, another giant rose from the ground before them. Ton and Chin let out disgruntled groans at the sight of it. Guy's fist tightened around his pike's handle.
However, something felt off.
The first sign of trouble was the cyclops' size. It wasn't your run-of-the-mill giant that they had learned to handle with ease. No, this one easily towered over all the previous cyclopes.
The second sign was when Chin charged a bit too far when Guy issued the PATA PATA command. Ever the enthusiastic one, Chin was ready to dive headfirst into the fray, even if the opponent they faced was taller than the Zigotons' battlements. With the last of his energy, he sprinted ahead.
Everything happened in the blink of an eye. Seeing Chin charge in alone enticed the giant to attack and its monstrous size allowed it to reach farther forward. With one strong smack! of its club, Chin was sent flying in the midst of his charge, leaving only his greatsword on the ground. He was gone in a flash.
"Aaiiiggh!" Chin's wail faded as he sailed overhead, landing far behind the defensive line they created.
"Chin!" Ton and Kan yelled in unison.
Hatapon raised his flag, cutting in, "Stick to your formation!"
The flagbearer glanced towards Guy, waiting for the next move.
Without Chin, Hatapon was left vulnerable against a foe they'd never faced before. Yet they were so close to the end—their efforts would have been for naught. And this surely wouldn't be the only time they'd have to fight an impossible enemy whilst bruised and battered.
"Stand firm!" Guy called out, the drum beats of the Concerto of Charge resounded, "Ready yourselves!"
The three remaining warriors rallied around Hatapon, he could feel the energy coursing through the air like electric currents within a thundercloud. The adrenaline was palpable—everyone was running on fumes.
When Guy issued the attack, the three of them charged forward as a unit. The series of fierce attacks was enough to stagger the giant, providing them another window of opportunity.
All three continued to fight bitterly, with Ton and Guy at the front and Kan bringing up the rear. Each warrior striked as the others pulled back to recuperate, not allowing for any pause in the onslaught. Matching their relentless pace, Hatapon continued calling out chants in the wake of the War Drums.
Yet the giant's stamina was endless. Even after sustaining multiple injuries, it raised its arm—preparing for another heavy attack. Ton and Kan appeared to falter at the sight, but Guy leapt forward with no hesitation.
The windup was only for a few more seconds, but that was all he needed. Guy planted his feet firmly on the ground and twisted his body. The bloody pike in his hand was aimed upward.
In that moment, the giant began to swing its club downward. It would have been a devastating attack if it hadn't abandoned its defensive stance. Within that split-second, Guy threw the pike.
It cut through the air like an arrow, straight and true. The giant had no time to react as the spearhead pierced into its battered helmet, finding its mark within the skull. But Guy has thrown it with such force that the entire pike went through, leaving a clean hole in its path.
Suddenly, everything was quiet. Hatapon felt his heart pounding in that brief lull. It was not the first time he'd seen such an impressive display of power, but the thought of the Almighty protecting them with such strength filled him with... ease. His faith was not misplaced.
The earth trembled as the giant fell. A sigh of relief seemed to emanate from the whole group, but Guy signaled a forward march.
"This isn't over yet," he said.
He was right, they still had to bring down that spawning structure. Hatapon raised the flag and urged everyone forward. With the last of their strength, they demolished the building, ensuring that beasts would no longer appear.
When they reached the totem at the end, Ton and Kan immediately turned.
"Chin—we need to go back for him!" Kan said, worry filling his voice.
"Did you see where he landed? He must be half-dead." Ton looked at Hatapon.
"He must have been launched a few measures back."
"Let's go." Guy nodded.
"He's here—!"
"Pretty bad shape.."
"Let's get him back to the Hideout."
"Kan, let me carry him. You're trembling."
"No, I'm fine.."
"...If you say so. But I swear if I have to carry both of you back—"
Chin woke up to the sight of cave paintings, dimly lit by flickering torches. He had opened his eye only a little before a sharp pain coursed through him. It took only a few seconds for the rest of it settled in, permeating through his whole body. He felt like he'd been chewed up, spit out and stomped on by a Dodonga. Several times over.
"Ow...." He muttered, closing his eye again.
There was a faint rustling beside him. "You're awake..!"
He'd recognize that voice anywhere.
"Kan.."
"I'd hit you over the head with your greatsword if you weren't already injured!"
"Err.. Maybe you're actually Ton?"
Kan sighed, "How are you? Are you feeling any pain?"
"Yeah, everywhere," Chin said, managing an upbeat tone, "What happened to that giant? How long have I..?"
"We killed it."
The heaviness of Kan's voice spoke volumes of the battle. Remorse pooled in the pit of Chin's stomach. He was taken out of the battle too early, a failure as the shield.
"Are you okay?" he asked, "Did you get hurt?"
A hand gently laid on his head, "Not as much as you. You.. were beat up badly. Guy had to help me."
"Oof... I still have all my limbs, don't I?"
"Yes, you doof."
"Haha.. Don't be so serious," he waved his hand around, despite the pain that erupted from it, "It takes a lot more than that to kill me."
"Chin.. I swear to the Almighty..." Kan let out an exasperated sigh.
He cracked his eye open a tiny sliver. His partner was sitting at his bedside, frowning down at him. No visible injuries, which was a relief. But the frown was a common look on Kan nowadays. Chin couldn't help but miss the times he smiled more often. Well... when they all smiled more often.
Nonetheless, he still loved any of Kan's expressions. Especially if they were directed towards him, even the negative ones.
"...Haiz, don't look at me like that." Kan looked away from him.
"Like what?"
"All shiny-eyed and dopey."
Chin snorted, "Well, how else should I look at you?"
Kan shook his head, "You aren't taking this seriously."
And there it was, the small fray in his voice. Something that was all too easy for Chin to notice.
He gazed up at the Hideout's ceiling, observing the ancient drawings of Patapons. "Hey... you were really upset, weren't you?"
"Of course, I was. I still am," Kan replied crossly, "You have to stop doing stupid things like that on the field."
Chin forced himself to sit up, despite how faint he felt. The pain that was consuming him early had been replaced with a dullness that spread from the tips of his fingers. Likely some pain-numbing magic from Kan.
"Surely it wasn't the stupidest thing I've done though," said Chin.
Kan turned back to him and his eye widened, "Hey—lay back down. Don't push yourself."
Before Kan could force him down, Chin leaned in and nuzzled him. He would have held him close too, but well, his arms refused to move.
"..."
"I'm fine," Chin assured him, "I'm not going anywhere."
Kan was still, as though any movement would disturb this moment. "You..."
"We've always been by each other's sides," continued Chin, "And nothing's going to change that."
"I know that," Kan sighed, "I just don't want to worry about losing you."
"Nuh-uh, I'm stuck to you like Hatapon is to his flag."
Kan let out a teary laugh, "Ugh, now why would you bring him up?"
"What? Am I wrong?"
Gently, Kan nuzzled him back. "I guess not."
If it were up to Chin, they would have stayed like this a little longer. But of course, the third of their Trifecta suddenly barged in.
"D'aww, look at the little lovebirds," Ton scooted in beside Kan, forcing the two of them to pull away. "I want a hug too! And a healing kiss!"
Kan clicked his tongue, pushing him away, "You weren't even hurt that badly."
"I was, in my heart!" Ton protested, "since you guys are hanging out without me now."
"Nice to see you too, Ton," grumbled Chin.
"How are ya doin', buddy? Your brain still all there?" Ton rubbed a fist again his head.
"Ow.. ow.."
"Yeah, that's right, 'ow'! You better not pull any Hero stuff like that again, only Guy's cut out for that!" Ton said, "You have any idea how hard it was to keep Hatapon safe without you?"
"I get it, Ton."
Kan chuckled, "Alright, that's enough, Ton."
"Hmmph." Ton stood with arms akimbo, "Well, anyway. Go get your rest. I'll be on watch with Sukopon."
"It was my shift—" Kan began to say but Ton gave him a look, "...Okay."
With that, Ton left them with a wave. They stared at each other.
"You know, he was really worried about you too, right?" Kan sat on his bed.
Chin laid back down, "I know."
Feeling lighter than he had in a while, Chin closed his eye and drifted off to sleep, comforted by Kan's familiar warmth by his side.
