Caleigh Falsworth

“Thank you.” she said, taking the seat. She settle down in the chair with a sigh, glad to have a moment where she could relax.

She took a sip of her coffee before looking over at the other woman. “I’m Caleigh, by the way.” she said with a smile. “And if we’ve met already, I apologize. There are so many new faces, I’m having a little trouble keeping all the names remembered.”

“Molly, and no, I don’t think we’ve met.  I’m not really around here all that often.  A pleasure to meet you, Caleigh.” She was getting the former Agent of SHIELD vibe off of this one but she didn’t have reason to bolt just yet.

She glanced up when one of the cafe staff came over with a slice of orange cake on a plate, “I’m sorry Miss, I think I forgot to bring this out to you.” “No harm done,” said Molly, picking up her purse out of her bag, “I don’t believe you charged me for it anyway.  Here, don’t worry about the change.” She gave her sweetest smile as she handed over her money.

She turned back to Caleigh as she picked up her fork, “So you work in the tower?”

Caleigh walked around the Avengers tower, taking the time to reconnect with those she knew from SHIELD as well as meet new people. There were so many new names and new faces, she hoped she could keep them all straight. She made her way up to the cafe, content to a coffee and sit for a while as she mentally went over all the new information she had learned that day.

She quickly grabbed her coffee and looked around for a place to sit, the only open seat beside a petite blond she hadn’t seen before. She made her way over to the woman, smiling when she reached her. “Mind if I sit here?” she asked, pointing to the seat beside her.

She glanced up from the steaming liquid, “Go right ahead,” she gestured at the woman she hadn’t met.  Well, at least I’m not being thrown in the deep end here, she considered, relieved that this was not, in fact, one of her fellow captives.

She wondered if she ought to reconsider her decision not to get a cake, her tea looked rather lonely.  She ran her hand through her pixie cut, the style wasn’t really what she was into, but at least she wasn’t shaved bald anymore.

Routine || Molly & ???

There were two occasions on which Molly could be convinced to set foot in the Avengers Tower.  The first was for her meetings with Logan, which she would be due for a second soon, she imagined.  The second was for the tests they ran on her each month like clockwork to make sure that Hydra hadn’t done . . . whatever.  Molly just tuned out and let them do her thing, it was easier than thinking about the fact that she was back in a clinical environment where the only difference was that the doctors involved promised that it was all for her, not what she could do for them.

With it all over and done with she went down to one of the cafes on the mezzanine, wanting to stop for a cup of tea to settle herself before she made the trip home.  She took a seat overlooking the open reception area, letting the brew warm her fingertips.  She didn’t know what it was about this place but her hands were always cold after the tests.  She considered the length of time it had been since she first came here, she really needed to stop avoiding her fellow captives.  She knew some of them were still around the tower, but how did one even start that conversation?  Hey, so we were held captive by the same people.  Wanna do lunch?  She groaned and took a sip of her tea.

Emma stared at Molly, almost feeling a twitch come to her eye. She could remember stories about Wade from Logan, back in the X-Men days, and the one time she thought she met him she was distracted by him mentally undressing her. She coughed for a moment and sat up. “Ah alright yes, I’ll er, try to do my best. No promises though, darling. Hm, well perhaps I’ll also try to see if I can find any of your ex cellmates. It’s a bit of a list to go down after all.” She stood up taking a card out of her coat pocket and handing it to her. “If you ever need help, drop me a line.”

She saw the reaction, “So you’ve heard of him then.”  She bit back a laugh, a fond smile making its way onto her face.  “I don’t really expect anyone to understand my relationship with Wade, but he’s like a brother to me.  But I also know that he’s probably perfectly fine, just on mission and not in a position to call.”  There was something in the way she held herself, the strength of her presence, that made her seem far older than the nineteen years she really was.  

“Some of the others make regular stops at or even live in the Avengers Tower.  You shouldn’t struggle too much.”  She would really rather avoid incursions with the people she had suffered hell with for now.  She took the card and stood, ready to show Emma out when she decided to excuse herself.  “I’ll keep you in mind.”

Emma frowned slightly but sipped her tea again. “Yes you’re welcome.”

She sighed and finished her cup and sit it down before folding her arms. “Determination also helps. The most important mind to control is your own. Without that, your powers will ruin you.”

She gave a little chuckle at that. “Logan, oh yes how could I miss his company.” She made a mental note to perhaps avoid this ‘Bek’ woman, as SHIELD made her rather uncomfortable to be around on a regular basis. But the other man she seemed nervous about had her interest. “Tell me more about him so maybe I can get a bead on him. Maybe I won’t be able to get him now, but I’ve a device back at home that could give me amplification to find him.”

She nodded, that was more what she was hoping for, the knowledge that turning her attention inward would ultimately help.  She took a slow drink, draining her cup.

She pursed her lips, considering.  She wasn’t quite up to telling the Avengers that she sometimes harboured a mercenary, but Emma didn’t seem all that interested in playing teams.  “His name is Wade Wilson, he goes by Deadpool professionally.  If you find him, you’ll probably encounter more than one voice in his head.  He likes Mexican food and large guns.”  She shrugged, “I’m really not sure what will help you.  His cells are always regenerating because of his healing factor.”

“As the saying goes, cooler heads prevail. I find trying to keep calm and focusing on keeping your head where it belongs is the best tactic. And you’re right though. I don’t normally do much with memories besides the occasional blocking back when I was part of other more unsavory organizations, but still I can see them. People in despair…I read every mind on the planet once. God it was so much. Every emotion, all at once. I thought I was going to go mad. I digress. My main recommendation is to just try and sooth yourself. Meditation might help?”

Emma flexed her fingers experimentally as they finally lost their luster. “Ah it comes and goes. I haven’t needed to get in scuffles too often. Magneto seems to be laying low. Waiting for a call from Stark. Reminds me of a school girl at the phone for her crush.” She smirked at the thought of Tony and Erik giggling over gossip and shook her head. “I’m glad you’ve got some friends though. If it would be alright with them, maybe I could meet with them at some point? See how they’re doing as well. I’m sure they’re taken care of in Stark’s ivory tower, but nonetheless I have my concerns.” Emma paused for a moment, taking a slow sip from her tea before looking at Molly in the eyes. “Would you like me to check on him for you? See if there’s anything in his head to be worried about?”

Her lips twisted in slight disappointment, “So, common sense.”  She was sort of hoping for some insight.  Well, no corners to cut there.  Molly frowned slightly at the mention of blocking memories for unsavoury organisations.  Certain things implied by that statements didn’t sit well with the code she made herself when she first went into business. 

She wrinkled her nose, “I’ve avoided my fellow captives so far, if that’s what you’re thinking when I say friends.  I . . . don’t really think that I can stomach it, reliving all of that.  Not right now, at least.”  She sipped her tea, “Somehow I don’t thing The Wolverine would be too keen on being checked up on.  Bek might be a little more open to it, but for a woman who lost her arm not too long ago, she has herself surprisingly together.  Rebekah Winters, she was a SHIELD scientist when everything went sideways, but so far she hasn’t given me reason to hold that against her.”

She thought of Wade, wondering where he could have ended up.  Maybe he had just been given a long job, but something made her want to worry.  She hoped it was just paranoia after her trials.  “His cells are constantly in flux, I’ve never been able to get any kind of read on his mind.  But you’re welcome to try.”

“Proximity is usually important when trying to work with a mind. I’ve heard of little girls with global telepathy before, and I wonder just how on earth they have the capacity for it. Took me quite a while to get to that level. I’m sure you’ll keep improving though.” Emma gave her a sympathetic smile. “My powers were off after the whole Phoenix fiasco. My thoughts wandered into other peoples heads. It’s so embarrassing when you’re thinking something cruel and suddenly anyone around you knows it. I’ve gotten that under check now at least, but I’m afraid I’m rambling now.”

Emma scoffed and shook her head. “I’ll agree with you there. They’re both just power mad organizations looking to one up each other and keep the world in check. Mutants have been rather underfoot when they consider how they want to run things. People like us, we need to stay safe in times like this. Mutants are working with SHIELD because of the HYDRA threat, but it’s only temporary and I’ve made up my mind I won’t be there when they turn on us.” Emma had a small fire within her when it came to the topic of all the fallout from HYDRA and the mutant hate from what Tony caused with the Phoenix. As she went to pick up her tea, an unusual clink sounded as she noticed her upper arms and hands had turned to diamond. Damnit, of all the times. She sighed and concentrated, letting her skin return to normal. “As I was saying…it’s important for us to know how we’re all doing in these complicated times.

She sipped her tea, hesitating, “Do you, do you know any tricks for keeping control?  When I drop into someone’s memories by accident, it’s rarely ever a happy thought.  The strongest memories are traumatic.”  She had a head full of nightmares and not all of them belonged to her.

She nodded along with what Emma was saying, agreeing.  “In the Avengers Tower I’ve found people I think genuinely want to look out for me, but all of them have been mutants.  There’s only one person who hasn’t been a mutant that I’ve been able to put my trust in, but I haven’t seen him since before SHIELD brought me in.  I’m worried about him, to tell the truth.”  Given who it was, worry was probably not necessary.  But she felt it nonetheless.  She saw the change in Emma’s skin, “Is that something that’s been harder to keep in check?”

Emma took the tea and added her milk and two sugars giving a passing thanks as she stirred it. “Quite a talent then. Do you know exactly how your powers work, or if there have been any negative side effects since the experimentation?” Emma wanted to figure out just what this girl was made of. She could see some elements of herself in the girl, but there was something different about her. She wasn’t quite sure what it was though. “I’m glad you’re taking care of yourself then. Anything would be better than a prison cell. The ones at SHIELD were…irksome. But nothing like HYDRA I’m sure.”

“I know that they work better when I’m physically touching someone.  But if I try hard enough, I can keep someone from even forming a memory of me.  I think that I’m still learning the extent of what I can do.”  She shrugged, “It’s been harder to control wandering into other people’s minds, in the facility they had a device that kept me out of their heads, I’m still regaining that control.”

She added a single sugar to her black tea, “SHIELD were convinced that I was abusing my powers, Hydra wanted me to.  Both of them robbed me of my choices.  In some ways, I think they were bad as each other.”  She took a short sip.

She folded the piece of paper and slipped it into her bag.  “Do you want a hand getting where you need to go?” She offered, she could at least walk with him and let him grab her if his head made him lurch this way or that.  She had a feeling that he wouldn’t accept help any more than she would accept his money.

“Nah,” he waved his hand, ushering her to the door as he followed. “Just get home safe, lemme know when you do,” he was more than certain he was going to pass out as soon as his head hit a pillow, but she could still text him to let him know she was alright.  “I’ll see ya soon, okay kid?”

She nodded, feeling oddly compelled to obey the order.  Perhaps it was just that genuine concern for her was so rare.  “I, I will.”  She agreed, resolving to remember to text.

“Yes.  Call me when you’re ready.  You’re in for a rough sleep for now.”  She smiled warmly and made her way down the hallway to the elevators.

“I pulled off one escape attempt.  Not my finest hour.  That’s when they hooked me up to all that crap you found me in.”  She cringed and rubbed her ribs, they were healed now, but they had been broken in the escape attempt.  “It matters that you came, okay?  I’ve never really been able to rely on anyone.”  She scratched behind her ear, the wig was growing itchy against her shorn scalp.  “So I’ll take the offer of having someone who’ll look out for me if I call.”

“I… Yeah alright.” Usually he’d push the matter, keep arguing until she caved in; in the end no one was more stubborn than Logan. His head however was pounding now, and he couldn’t find it in himself to argue more. He grabbed a pen and a scrap of paper, jotting his number down and sliding it over the table.  “I’ll come runnin’.” he promised, standing up slowly.

Apparently blackmailing him was a necessary step to get into the family fortune. Cold-hearted bastard.” Emma hoped that maybe opening up would help her feel more comfortable. She wasn’t used to regular conversation without knowing what someone was thinking. Scott would have driven her mad a long time ago if she couldn’t (and even still he was difficult.)

“Well if they’re smart they won’t come crashing through your doors while I’m here. I care to think I’m not one for minions to trifle with. But reagrdless I’m sure you’ve covered up your trail quite nicely. But anyway, let’s get to why I’m here. There were quite a lot of mutants that were captured by HYDRA. Due to…various circumstances, I’m not exactly in with the X-Men anymore. But the Brotherhood has accepted me however. Don’t be alarmed, I’m not here for a recruitment drive or to say ‘lend your powers to the good of mankind.’ No I just want to make sure you’re safe and sound, and not getting into any business that could put you within danger of them again.”

She poured the boiled water into the pot, and brought everything over on a tray.  Cups, sugar, spoons, a small jug filled with milk so Emma could take her tea however she preferred.  “I’ve never really thought to be proud of myself.  I just realised that I could do more than just survive, and rolled with it.  I effectively just rolled with it for five years and somehow stayed on top of the ball.”

She listened to Emma speak, she wasn’t used to people without motives, but she could allow her mind to be open for now.  She seemed genuine enough, not fanatical, but it was hard to find someone who was a part of any particular faction who didn’t really want to recruit.  “I’m perfectly safe here.  Comfortable too.  But thank you for your concern.”

She smiled warmly, in spite of what she knew about him, he made her feel safe.  There was probably something worthy of alarm in her pattern of feeing safe with dangerous men.

“I can come by when the dust settles on what you’ve learned here.”  She said with a nod, “But I won’t be taking your money.  I would still be a lab rat if not for you.  I owe you my life, the least I can do is return yours.”

“That’ll be fine,” he nodded, sitting back as a dull throb started in his head. 

“Hey don’t be like that, you’re a strong kid. You woulda made it outta there. We weren’t gonna let anything bad happen to you guys,” He promised, giving the best comforting smile Logan could manage. “And I don’t mind payin’ ya. But if you don’t want the money just call me if you need anythin’ okay?” The poor kid had been through enough to have to deal with stuff on her own any more.

Emma’s smile faltered as she pursed her lips, but the corners of her mouth still turned upwards. “Well well, I wasn’t even going to try without your permission. Figured you wouldn’t like that very much after all. Maybe you have some gifts you don’t know about yourself? However it is rather impressive that your mind can’t seem to be read.”

Walking in and surveying the place Emma found it was rather well designed. “It’s quite lovely in here. I remember my first place when I was a girl, bought it myself with the money I got using my talents. I assume that’s how you’ve got what you got?” Taking a seat she folded her hands, and looked at Molly with concern. “I’m here because I wanted to check in on you and the other mutants who had been in captivity. An old…acquaintance of mine, Mystique told me about you, and I decided to come see just who you were.”

“It certainly does me well from time to time.”  Like when Hydra tried to brainwash her, for example.  It was how she managed to make an escape attempt at one point, but since the attempt was foiled, Molly considered it not worth mentioning.

She closed the door once Emma had entered, “This isn’t my first place, but yes, once I realised I could do more than make bodega clerks remember me paying for things and started to think big, I realised how easy it would be to get proper accommodation.  This one I actually bought.”  She spoke of these events like they were some time ago, which they were.  She had lost her memories when her powers activated, and been erased from her family’s mind.  New to the country, not yet enrolled in school, and the box containing the family albums lost in transit, Molly had very few things to piece together who she was in the time it took for her family to call the police about a twelve-year-old home intruder.  That was seven years ago.  Two years and three foster homes later, Molly-Claire Whatever Surname She Chose At The Time was on the streets of Manhattan.

Light on her feet, she stepped into the kitchen and put the kettle on to boil, over the sound of the appliance, her crisp Mancunian tones were easily heard as she gestured for Emma to take a seat at the table.  “There’s a rather nice Chinese family living there now, I trust Hydra to be clever enough to realise that I’m no longer there.”

She prepared a teapot, drumming her fingers as the water boiled.  “I suppose we lab rats are quite interesting to a lot of people,” she considered.  She had to go to the tower for tests every few weeks, to make sure there were no lasting effects to her mind or body.  It all made her skin crawl.

“You’re going to want to sleep pretty soon, it hits you hard.”  She warned him, withdrawing her hands.  She rolled her shoulders, stretching her neck by tilting her head from side to side.  She was tired too, while she was used to it, it was still a two way street.  She would need to rest soon too.

“Yeah I’m sure,” He wasn’t looking forward to the dreams he’d be having, but if it let him know about his past he was going to take it.  “In a couple of weeks you think you’d be up for this again?” he asked after a minute. “I think I could use this. I don’t know what the goin’ rates are on helpin’ someone recover lost memories but I can pay ya.” this seemed like a stressful thing to do, the least he could do is offer money.
