Born 95 years ago today in Paris: provocative nouvelle vague visionary Jean-Luc Godard (3 December 1930 - 13 September 2022). I would have first been exposed to the high potentate of European art cinema’s work at an impressionable age studying Film Theory at Carleton University – and it stirred my brains with a spoon! I definitely recall we studied À bout de souffle (aka Breathless) (1960), twisted black comedy Weekend (1967) – that shock ending! - and Two or Three Things I Know About Her (1967). Years later, I discovered Le mepris (aka Contempt) (1963) – starring Bardot at her sullen best! - and the spectacular movies he made in collaboration with his muse and then-wife, the luminous Anna Karina (my favourite is Vivre sa vie (1962)).
