TECHODES, BEINGS WHO WELL PASSED the uncanny valley unnerved Gillis. Yet another condition to his work terms, as much as he would state he vastly preferred to work alone. Not that he could stop it; Central was not the kind of boss who takes kindly to any form of refusal. “Good. You’ll need to, honestly.” He told him quietly. “Most of them fight back. To them, they’re not really like you. They think they’re that person, back from the dead with deeds to do. And that…” He looked to the side, offering him the lighter, “Is what makes them dangerous.”

Grade B…it really didn’t strike him as that sort of Techode. Regardless, it was something he would take note of. “You don’t have to smoke if you don’t want to. Not sure if Techodes like you can really taste it or just do it for appearances and formality.” He informed Sylus as he handed him the folder. “This one’s our target. Unit 627A9, former name ‘Sylvia Clarence’. Died 2 years ago, brought back as a Grade C Techode to work as a Desk support unit in Dyson Industries. She went rogue approximately 72 hours ago and has since eluded detection. We’ve surmised she returned either to her living parents or her husband. The question is, where should we check first?” Perhaps it was a test, to see if he would deduce where the Techode would have gone.

HAVING LITTLE TO NO EXPERIENCE with the area made Sylus wary about how he’d seem to his enforcer. He gave the lighter an appraising look, mulling it over, then shook his head. Maybe smoking wasn’t a good idea on his first ‘mission’. Gillis didn’t seem to be the lying type, so he’d believe that it was fine.

Sylvia Clarence... No, 627A9. Neither names rang a bell. The Techode took the file, flipping through the pages. Thankfully, the report didn’t describe her as a violent rogue. Maybe her pre-self hadn’t had anger issues.

Simple on the surface, the choice complicated itself in Sylus’ thoughts. He assumed that she went to her husband, but on the other hand, she might have wanted the security of home. Hopefully, even if they guessed wrong, 627A9 would stay wherever they didn’t check.

“Which is nearer?” he asked quietly. If it was a test -- and it probably was -- he couldn’t afford to screw up. “And, if we have any information on who she had a better relationship with, she might go to them.”

Sylus, that’s a nice name! Ii thinks all names are nice. It’s just developed a fondness for unique names and spellings since it makes its job easier. Life is difficult for A.I.s with no facial recognition who need to identify people solely by their first name.

Ii kicks of its first humanlike interaction with this human by churning out a prewritten reply to “What is this?”

 Well, there were more exciting things to think about. The A.I. at his fingertips, for example. Although... He would’ve taken this as a prank if it weren’t for how swiftly and artificially its responses sent. Sylus hesitated, fingers hovering over the keyboard as he wondered how to take in the new ‘discovery’.

 “Aye-aye,” he said aloud. That, he decided, was how he’d pronounce it. Even if it sounded stupid.

       What does Ii stand for?        Also, there are a few problems with this computer        Why didn’t your creator put you on a better one?

He shoved the keys a little harder than needed as he replied; he was still salty about the jammed port.

                                                  An unimpressed glance is shot in directionof the voice as fingers carefully tapped against the metall of he rbike’s frame. “I won’t let that happen. She’s a ‘lil rusty but she’s a fighter, y’know?” Tthere were always other innocent bikes standing around to donor parts for Haku’s metallic companion. ”And since it seems to be Point-out-things-to-strangers Day, Imma go compliment your hair,” the girl siiled unaffectedly. “Nice hair, man!”

      The cyborg let out a scoff at her retort, his stare going from the bike to its owner. Did she seriously just compare his hair to her bike? It was almost enough to offend him. Still, Sylus casually leaned his head against a pole to make sure his ponytail was still secure -- it was. With that out of the way, he squinted at her.

                   “I dare you to find a comeback that has nothing to do with my hair.”

          “Because I lived there before? I’m not lying.” How could he not know about her home planet existing in space? It’s been there forever. She almost felt offended, but ,yet again, her people weren’t exactly welcoming to others outside their species. “Have you ever been to space? It’s nearby some other planet. Venus, I think.”

           “...Near Venus? Most people haven’t been to space.” He’d assumed she was bluffing, but now she seemed pretty serious.  Still, he didn’t understand why he’d never even heard of another planet. Sylus had always been interested in conspiracy theories -- even the boring ones. “Wouldn’t someone know about it?”

     “No problem, but hurry up- it’s best if they don’t know we were here until this guy tells them.” Frowning, she waited for Sylus before taking a series of backroads to get people off their tail if they were on it in the first place. Needless to say, any more explanation would have to wait until later, but they quickly entered a much nicer-looking neighborhood in town, Ali approaching a building and swiping a card to gain access before waving to the security guard out front.

     “He’s with me. Cut him some slack, ok? We just had a run-in with a Bounty Hunter and I promised him safety.” At her explanation the guard nodded, extending her a visitor’s pass which she then handed to Sylus.

     “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine here. No, let’s get you to the caf and I’ll explain everything when we’re there.”

     She neglected to mention that this was her school, didn’t she.

    Sylus hesitated. Then, clueless on what else to do, he followed Ali. As they reached a different part of town, the tension eased. The buildings branched out, the silence reassured him, the area just seemed safer. Once they stopped, his heart slowed against his chest. Sighing, he gave the building and security guard a once-over while Ali did the talking.

     Bounty Hunter... So I was right. Given the stupor he was in, he was tempted to just follow the girl. Or, he was until his caution took over. “No.”

   Sylus held up a hand to the visitor’s pass and shook his head, scowling the tiniest bit. “How about sooner? Now would work -- wherever the hell we are.”

     With him, any situation guaranteed mistrust. Even one where someone saved his life.

So, whoever built this computer not only this took the time and effort to seal the USB ports so tightly that they can’t be unblocked with anything less than a laser chisel, but also let its main window detect when its close button is pressed and react accordingly.

It’s as if they set out to make the least functional computer short of a brick. Damn.

Sylus did a double take, turning his attention back to the damned window. Had someone installed some kind of chatroom? That’s what it seemed like. Still, it was... odd. Who would design a computer like this? At least there didn’t appear to be a webcam.

His fingers hovered over the keyboard as he wondered what to do. Finally, guessing that he ‘had’ to reply to the chat, he did so.

       I’m Sylus.        What is this?

After a moment’s consideration, he added:
