when i was 14, me and devin macias met at a hard girls show and then tried to start a band to play ska covers of hard girls songs. while unsuccessful, we ended up putting on a show in my garage and becoming friends. by this point devin had made his high school friend jeff wilson a meme on social media, but only like 3 people i knew had ever even seen him before. at age 15, i was on the emo revival train hella hard and wanted to start a band like that, and devin found a craigslist ad from taylor bortner*** and tricked jeff into playing drums (he only ever played in school band before). we got together in my garage and recorded two songs on the first day we met each other and bread club was born. we made really gross music before taylor moved back to pennsylvania in 2012. on taylor’s return in january 2013, devin left the band and got replaced by cole calvo, another craigslist find*** (this time by dan vo) who i had become friends with while taylor was gone. through drastic personality shifts and personal differences, periods where no one took us seriously and periods where we were playing 5 shows in a month, good music and bad music, and a great experience touring the west coast, we’ve become close friends with one another and people we’ve met through the band and improved significantly as musicians and humans. because of college, distance, and varying expectations and willingness levels, bread club is ending for good this time. i’m grateful for the weird and cool experiences i’ve had and everyone who booked us, let us borrow drums, wrote about us, came to see us, let us stay on their floor or put us on in their car. i also wanna shout out jason hallyburton, the secret fifth member of bread club without whom we’d have had way more trouble. we have a last show planned in san jose with a stacked lineup of hard girls, leer, snaggletooth, and blaster dead and a new song we recorded for a 4 way split with beds, skull kid, and flowers taped to pens that will be out on vinyl and on the internet. in the meantime you can listen to our last album, “alive//well,” on our bandcamp. rip dead club 408.
***correction: devin and i met at a proxy stalkers show in early 2011. i knew trevor from PS through a mutual friend named darryl (we were all in a band at the time). devin was wearing a mr. bungle shirt and i got all stoked about it. we hung out at a couple other PS shows before losing touch for a while when i deactivated my facebook. when i reactivated it like 6 months later, devin and i had both gotten into algernon cadwallader & he said he was tryna start an emo band so i offered to play bass. what david is probably referring to is when i responded to a craigslist ad put up by jaake margo (kill the bats) looking to start a punk band. nothing came from that but it was funny! -taylor
