Here are 10 facts that will help you learn more about Afghanistan and their people!
1- Afghanis is the currency of Afghanistan while Afghans is the term that refers to the people of the country. Both terms are usually mixed up by people from around the world because of their phonetic similarity but the difference in meaning is –as you can see- huge.
2- Afghanistan has been in the news more than any other country in the last decade. This is mainly as the result of the many conflicts that has been taken place in the country. 3- Afghan rugs are very popular around the world and are considered to be the finest. They’ve even won the international awards in the years 2008, 2013 and 2014. The rugs are woven by various ethnic groups in Afghanistan but mainly by Turkmen – which is the main ethnic group of Turkmenistan but are also found in Afghanistan- and they are also made by Afghan refugees residing in Pakistan. Despite the fact that a large amount of rugs are produced in Afghanistan, usually all of them are transported to Pakistan and then shipped abroad, which makes it almost imposible to know whether a rug was actually woven in Afghanistan or Pakistan. 4- The main supply of income in Afghanistan comes from agriculture. The most popular products being vegetables, rice, fruits and nuts. Afghanistan is also rich in natural resources such as gas and oil which can be found in the north. The country also has silver, zinc, gold, copper, iron, uranium, coal, chromites, talc, barites, sulfur, lead, salt and last but not least, precious and semi-precious stones such as a vibrant blue stone, called lapis lazuli, which has been used to beautify the tomb of the Egiptian king, Tutankhamen. 5- Poetry is a very important aspect of the afghan culture. Thursday nights are considered to be poetry night in many Aghanistan cities, such as the City of Herat where women and men of all ages gather to celebrate poetry while enjoying sweet teas and pastries. In more recent years, poetry in Afghanistan has been used as a way of tackling social issues, with women’s rights being one of the most popular topics. 6- It is widely believed that Afghanistan is an arid and dry region and that it doesn’t snow. This is a huge misconception because it definelty does snow and actually the winter months can be really brutal. Between December and February snow is fairly common, especially in the north of the country. 7- A lot of people may believe that the first oil paintings were made in the Renaissence Europe but they were actually made in the caves of Bamiyan located in Afghanistan around 650 BC. This cave is also very well known for once being the home of the two largest standing Buddhas of the world, who were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. 8- The name Afghanistan translates to the ‘land of Afghans’ and this was first adopted by politicians in the early 19th century. 9- Pashto and Dari (farsi) are the two most widely spoken languages in the country. With an estimation of 35% of the population speaking pashto and a 50% speaking dari. The rest of the people speak regional languages such as uzbek, turkmen, baloshi and pashayi. 10- Afghanistan is considered to be the land of opium and it is the fastest and largest growing produce of the country. The heroin production comes from the opium poppy cultivation which is why about 90% of the heroin sold in Europe comes from the opium growth in Afghanistan.
