Divergent: Ch 29 & 30

Special Sunday update!  Because I’m just that glad to be done with cross-country driving. :)

Time for the Dauntless initiation day.  Tris says that most people in the faction are drunk from partying before it even begins.  Hm, maybe it’s just me, but I don’t really associate “drunk before noon” with “anything even remotely good.”  Especially since it’s not the first time Tris has casually mentioned the entire faction getting drunk.  Sounds more like they’re jumping at any chance to get messed up because their lives are craptastic and they have to jump off a moving train just to get to work and back.

Divergent: Ch 28

After storming off from training, Tris goes outside to mope for a while.

I just have to make sure that tomorrow, when I go through my own fear landscape, I prove them wrong. Yesterday failure seemed impossible. Today I’m not sure.

Once.  You failed once.  Get over your special-snowflake syndrome and find something new.  I would be forgiving if she were upset over having relived a very traumatic experience, but that’s not what’s going on here.  She doesn’t care that she had to go through that.  Not the first time, and not the second time.  Instead, she reserves all her angst for ‘failing,’ and I just don’t have any patience for that.

Divergent: Ch 26 & 27

Tris and Tobias (she makes the switch to the new name immediately) walk around holding hands and talking.  I’m still not buying this romance.  Maybe because I buy every other part of their relationship, and the romantic bits just seem tacked on.  Like, it’s not enough for her to be friends with this guy, or to be intrigued by him, or to have a connection (real or made-up) based on both being Divergent.  Nope, that’s not enough, we need to throw in kisses and hand-holding as well.  But it’s just not handled well enough, so it all feels really tacked on.  I guess what really gets me is that a platonic relationship between these two would be fascinating and worth-while, but we can’t have that.

Divergent: Ch 24 & 25

In the middle of the night, Christina wakes up Tris because there’s a commotion.  They run out find out that Al died at the bottom of the chasm.  It seems he’s committed suicide.  The emotional reaction to it is actually pretty well done.  For all this book’s faults, it at least does emotions fairly well.

Tris goes in for another torture session that’s supposed to magically teach her how to slow down her own heart rate through the power of happy thoughts and fairy farts.  Or, you know, whatever.  One excuse would make about as much sense as any other.  This time, she’s trapped in a glass box filling with water with all her classmates watching.
