A Year of Anime
Part 1
Ouran Host Club
Everyone knows about this anime. Haruhi smashes a 8 million yen vase and must pay back the debt by joining the Ouran Host Club. I like the humor and over-the-top nonsense. Haruhi is my favorite character, and I want to continue being like her. It’s a fun romantic comedy that I can appreciate during its time.
Into the Forest of Fireflies’ Light
What a lovely story about friendship. Hotaru was six when she befriends a masked man named Gin, who’s a spirit. The catch is that Hotaru can’t touch Gin because he’ll disappear forever from human contact. Every summer, they spend time together. As time passes, their relationship becomes uncertain. Once Hotaru is in high school, she wants to make this summer with Gin they’ll never forget. The movie is beautifully made and a delightful piece to watch. Warning: There are feels in this movie.
Gangsta
I love this anime so much. Gangsta is about these two men, called the Handymen, who take the jobs that the police and mob can’t do. The anime is full of mafia, drugs, prostitutes, and so much more. I was so invested in this show. DAMN, THIS ANIME WAS RADICAL! What sucks is that it ended on a cliffhanger, and chances of a second season is unlikely as Manglobe shut down for bankruptcy. I do want people to watch it. That way, fans can support the manga and read it. By supporting the manga, an anime studio could pick up Gangsta, and it can get the conclusion they deserve. It’s wishful thinking, but this show is worthy of coming back. I miss the Handymen, and I want to see them kick ass again.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
This is a timeless film. Sorry, I had to. Makoto has the special power to travel back in time and fix any mistake. It’s a simple plot, but the characters and animation make up for it. Everything was light and flowed with the setting. It is a nice film to see.
Wolf Children
I have a larger appreciation of parents for raising kids, especially moms like Hana. Wolf Children is about Hana raising her two half human and half wolf children, Ame and Yuki. I adore this film because I see the reality of being a parent. It’s a hard and rewarding process to raise kids, and Hana is a good mom. She has to protect her kids’ identities, raise them as wolf children, and keep a smile when things get bad. It’s a highly recommend movie to me. It’s pure, sad, and joyful. Warning: There are feels in this movie. I mean, A LOT of feels. Bring tissues.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid
I enjoyed it. The anime is about Kobayashi getting a dragon maid named Tohru after drunkly asking her to be her maid one night. Tohru learns how the world works and being a maid to Miss Kobayashi. We come across more dragons and humans along the series. It’s lighthearted and easy to watch. I like the animation & the Japanese actors are good as their roles. There’s nothing serious from this series, it’s pure fun.
Tokyo Godfathers
Can I tell you that I freaking went through a journey with this movie? I screamed, gasped, laughed, and had the best time watching Tokyo Godfathers. The movie is about three homeless people: a middle-aged drunk, trans woman, and runaway teen. They find a baby abandoned in a garbage on Christmas Eve and go find their parents. The film doesn’t shy away from the reality of homelessness. Each of them have a story on why they’re living out in the cold. For these three to bring a baby back to their parents, it is a crazy adventure. I already love this movie and am a new fan of Satoshi Kon.
