Team Jaya Prime, 2016 Summary
The Year of the Reaper has come to a close. Welcome to 2017!
It is time to tally up where team Jaya Prime stands, here at the start of the new year, because a lot is changing.
Instagram: My main professional Instagram account @fractals_by_jaya is at 2,834 followers with a mere 210 posts. That is more than twice where it was at the start of 2016. My 2017 goal for that account is 10,000 followers. My Lili will be helping me with posts and account management, and I also have a marketing team working with me. For the last nine posts of the year, the average likes are at 453 and the average comments are at 52. In 2016, for the first time ever, some of my posts started trending in primary tags such as "hypnotic" and "surreal". If I can see one of my posts trend even once in the tag "beautiful" before the end of 2017, then the case will be closed on Instagram.
Twitter: This one is more difficult. I used Twitter primarily for my music career, but the loss of my hearing left that account gathering dust. I pushed it forward a little in 2016, but 2017 is the year that I really take the account up a notch. It's currently at 360 followers.
Pinterest: Pinterest is a mystery to me. I post to it, but get no traction. The marketing team has, in a single month, already proven more effective at Pinterest than I have ever been. My account is currently at 395 followers. I have no current goals for it, but its power of linking and advertising will be put to the test in 2017.
Tumblr: I have had mixed successes with Tumblr. The changes that have come with Yahoo have only made it worse, and slowed progress, but I'll at least maintain an ongoing presence here. It has the most flexibility of all the platforms that I am posting my art to. Multiple links, SEO, galleries, and so much more. 362 followers on my secondary account, 756 on my primary account.
Facebook: The marketing team agrees with me that Facebook has fallen by the wayside in terms of exposing art and converting fans to sales. They are re-posting my content from Instagram to Facebook, but it has the lowest priority.
DeviantArt: To my own surprise, I'm back on DeviantArt and semi-active. It is filled with "raw fractal" racists, and that nauseates me, but it is excellent for consolidating my stores into one place, for exposure, and it is centered directly on the art more than any other place. I have my friend Martina to thank for gifting me a three month core subscription. I've extended that for the first six months of 2017, and I have begun running features and doing more networking on the platform. My Lili will be helping on comms with DeviantArt and helping with notifications. My goals for DeviantArt are to see how much the admins still support fractal art, and my art in particular (again, racism), and if any of the links convert to sales. My account is at 184 watchers right now.
Redbubble: Redbubble has quickly become my primary store. They have no minimum to hit before they pay you. Their packaging and products are exceptional. They allow you to customize the margins. Product customization is fast. They do not have errors like the other sites. They have so many positives that it is absurd. I currently have 35 followers. "Deep Space Dreamer" is easily my top-selling design. I've started a spreadsheet to track sales by art, product, and type.
Society6: I do not get why people like this site. I keep pushing art to the site, but no sales. I am not giving up yet. I see a lot of success coming out of this site, so I have a lot to learn here. I have started a trend of spending at least an hour out of two or three days each week simply finding new artists to follow. I find they often follow back, and there is increased activity on my art. There are currently 53 followers on this account, and almost all of those came from starting this pattern in the past two weeks.
Advertising: I experimented with some advertising in 2016. Direct to a person, by name, via email, was easily the most successful. While I ran an add on Instagram with my "Bloom of Fire" fractal flower, and while it raked in quite a few likes, it did not convert to any sales. I did later manage to convert some of those likes into followers, but very little. Targeting really seemed to help with the advertising. It was also an annoyance that the ad did not build on the original post in my gallery, but instead created a new and separate piece of art. I ran a Twitter advertising campaign for my book, and while there was some exposure, it led to no conversions. Even though Twitter used the original post to create the ad, the amount of exposure was extremely marginal. In fact, it is likely I will never run another Twitter ad. Instagram, however, will see more of my attention. Outside of email, the most successul promotions were when I posted three ads artistically on my primary Instagram account. I will do the same in 2017.
Exclusive Limited Edition: I got an invitation to the New York based gallery Curioos, and while I am running a few prints thru them, I am also running a limited edition exclusive set of printings for "Origami Autumn" as well as acryllic block casts of the collage. It is an experiment I will look into more in 2017. While I maintain a presence on many other stores, it is possible that I'll actually try to push this one up to a level with Redbubble.
Wikimedia: I got onto Wikipedia's media site Wikimedia in 2016. I found out that links coming in from Wikipedia are about 100 times more powerful than normal links. I also discovered that dot Org links are increasingly powerful. I'm increasing organic SEO while giving back to the community, and using fractal stock that I already put into the commons for others to use -- including my award-winning "Chaos Clock" fractal. After having a fight with one of the moderators, I finally got it worked out, and now the art is on Wikimedia and linked into article. I want at least two more high quality fractals of mine on Wikimedia before the end of 2017.
Overall: I need to spend more time on promotions and less time creating. The art that already exists needs to have more exposure, and I need to give the art that time and respect to grow... not drown it out in new art. So while I will keep creating, I am slowing down my product cycle and increasing my promotions.
Extended Stores: In 2017, I'm planning on expanding my stores to include Snapmade, ArtsCow, and the ArtsCow browsing store CowCow. This expansion is primarily to create fractal cigarette cases. Cigarette branding and packs are being banned, and have already been banned in countries such as France. Because of my connections to the pro-tobacco community, I have potential exposure to more than 10,000 artists and consumers who would love these designs. That potential needs to be tapped.
Patreon: I kicked off my Patreon with the December launch of the deluxe edition of my book. It is currently empty, just a few things, but this is going to be a major player in 2017. If I can hit $1000 USD every month by the end of 2017, then I will consider it a success. I am still working out the plans at this very moment.
Sites Axed: Ghost dot IO, as well as Evermore. Considering axing Dribbble in 2017.
