I'm a big fan of "Video On Demand", but it is a difficult nut to crack. I love a bit of high-brow and a bit of low-brow, but mostly my taste lies somewhere in between. Middle-brow, I suppose - the middling bit of a unabrow. Entertaining but challenging. Sadly iTunes and its competitors do not really provide much to my taste. Then there's Mubi which is great, but veers a bit too much to the challenging for my liking. Just when I was about to climb a mountain and proclaim VOD to be DOA, I experienced a new player in town.
Peter Strickland's "Berberian Sound Studio" definitely falls in the European arthouse section of the video store and I enjoyed it thoroughly for it's unabashed cinephilic creepiness and lack of driving narrative. It's a masterpiece of analogue sound, a mind-bending companion to "The Conversation". If you like your film cooked up weird, it's a must-see. Best of all you can stream it from the Curzon website, which is the point of this ramble. The Curzon is an irritatingly uncomfortable and expensive cinema, but its on-demand section has a banquet of high and mid brow films to choose from. I will be using it again, yes indeed. That is all.
Women think the name Baldessari is sexy. This perfectly formed and very entertaining short documentary on the multi disciplinarian artist John Baldessari lives up to that sexiness. I'm slightly ashamed to say I had never heard of him before the extraordinary Mr. Todd pointed me towards the film, voiced by the incomparable Tom Waits and directed by Joost and Schulman of Catfish fame. No more boring art indeed; I wonder if the filmmakers are taking that advice to heart - they also directed Paranormal Activity 3 and are currently making number 4. Not judging - we all gotta eat - just sayin'.
Ah, the Hollywood treatment. Don't get me wrong - I love a cleverly shallow blockbuster as much as the next moron - but sometimes you wonder how things can go so tits up. Let's say you're a Hollywood hack; you read a novel of incredible ambition, scope and, most importantly, subtlety. You finish the last page and you think "my God, this has risen to the top like cream in a fetid shitstorm of a world. This has made me feel a kind of wonder and inspiration I haven't experienced in years. It might just be the best novel of the decade. I must make it a movie. It must be ambitious; it must have incredible scope. Most importantly, I must make its themes INCREDIBLY obvious for our stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid (that's five stupids) audience. We could cast it well. We could. Instead let us cast Tom Hanks. And Halle Berry. Actors, sort of. Big names in the 90s. It's gonna be huge."
A trailer has never made me so depressed. The only way it could be worse is if Sean Pean had been cast too. Sigh.
Geometry and colour patterns are good for your soul*. Just take one look at Andy Gilmore's work if you don't believe me. I've been a huge fan for ages and bought a print for my sister's birthday once. She loved it. You should buy a print or two, too. I use one of his images as my desktop background on my laptop. I open the flap and it's like meditating. Thank you for the good times, Andy.

I just backed my first Kickstarter project today. The trailblazer John K. created Ren & Stimpy, a cartoon that had me addicted as a teen and I'm sure is single-handedly responsible for my base sense of humour. John is creating a new cartoon called "Cans Without Labels" starring George Liquour, American, who was Ren & Stimpy's owner in a past life. John's work has had a massive influence on the weird cartoons your children watch now (Spongebob, to name one). That alone is a reason to back this. Come on! What's 30 bucks?
I'd never heard of her, but this video has made me a huge fan of artist Maisie Broadhead in one timelapsed fell swoop. Fun, high brow, wonderful.
Osbert Parker is a genius. He takes 40s/50s film noir scenes, painstakingly cuts them apart and makes literal animated pastiches using stop motion and any kind of collage you can imagine. He has, most of all, an enviable understanding of how editing works. And once you have that, you can mould almost anything into a sort of sensible narrative... Genius.
Went to see this last week. With my mother. It wasn't the most appropriate cross generational movie (lots of full frontal female nudity and graphic violence), but it was pretty funny - like Herzog's Bad Lieutenant was laugh-out-loud-while-scratching-your-head funny. Highlights include one of most comic uses of a loose thread in movie history, and an eye-watering, cringe-worthy scene with a chicken drumstick. Mr. Chickadance will never be the same again.
These guys never get anything wrong.

Usually, we are remarkably adept at detecting and identifying surface boundaries despite incomplete optical information.
