A Very Extra At-Home Weeknight Facial Routine
I know that a lot of people save big self-care nights for the weekend. The number of Sunday night at home facial routines I’ve read is probably no less than a hundred. But why save treating yourself for the weekend? I don’t know about you guys, but nights early in the week (here’s looking at you Mondays) tend to be my least favorite. And that’s why I’ve started a tradition of going all in on a languid, luxurious Monday night facial routine. Now I’m not really an in-spa facial fan, but an at-home DIY facial is one of my favorite things in the world. Here’s how I tackle it step-by-step.
Double Cleanse: Now I double cleanse every single night. Once to break down my makeup and sunscreen and once to actually cleanse my skin. My current go tos are the Peach & Lily Power Calm Hydrating Gel Cleanser and the Glowbiotics Probiotic Revitalizing Cleanser.
Detox Mask: Before I pile lots of good things onto my face, I really want to have a clean, detoxified, blank canvas. So I take things one step further by using a clay mask. My two absolute favorites are the Peach & Lily Pore Proof Perfecting Clay Mask and the Chantecaille Detox Clay Mask because neither one dries out or irritates my skin, and in fact both include soothing ingredients. I’ll leave this on usually without a specific concern about time.
Toner & Essence: Now that we’ve got a clean slate, I’ll swipe on a gentle exfoliating toner to get any still remaining dead skin cells out of the way. My current favorite is the Peach & Lily Good Acids Pore Toner because it sports plenty of balancing ingredients and is gentle enough for everyday use. Then I pat on two layers of essence - necessary? No not necessarily. I just like to get some hydration on my skin before the next step. The essence I’m using currently is the Peach & Lily Wild Dew Treatment Essence (sorry, I’m on a bit of a P & L kick!), but I’ve also loved the Tatcha Essence in the past.
High Frequency Treatment: My at-home high frequency machine is ridiculously fun and weirdly therapeutic to use (and oddly cheap on Amazon). I take a large piece of medical gauze (I pick it up at a regular pharmacy), cover half my face - tucking the edges into a regular face washing headband, sanitize whichever attachment I’m using, and then slowly go over each section of my face twice. This treatment increases blood circulation, helps clear up acne, and boosts collagen.
Serum & Oil: One more layer of essence gets slapped on before I apply my serum and oil to prep for the next step. I use two pumps of the Peach & Lily Glass Skin Refining Serum, and then press two layers of the Peach & Lily Pure Beam Luxe Oil to get my skin nice and slick.
Gua Sha: The Gua Sha is one of my favorite skincare tools. I hold it at an angle and slowly scrape outwards and upwards across every inch of skin. My skin always flushes afterwards, so you can really see the boost in circulation this causes, but it also helps with lymphatic drainage and de-puffing. Always make sure to sanitize it before you use it and clean it afterwards.
Moisturizer: We are almost done guys, I swear! I massage on a healthy dollop of moisturizer now, to seal in all of that hydrating goodness we applied before. I was using the Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Moisturizer, but right now I’m testing out the Peach and Lily Matcha Pudding Antioxidant Cream.
Sculpting: Alright the last, and possibly most extra step. I use a vibrating face sculpting bar, which is not a helpful name but it’s a t-shape with a long handle that pulses to further boost drainage as you massage your face with it. Similarly to the other tools, I slowly massage each section of my skin outwards and upwards.
Optional Additions!: I’ll light a candle or two and lower the lights while doing this long process for, you know, a nice spa-like environment. You can also turn on some music or be a weirdo like me and listen to Liv Tyler’s ridiculously soothing voice as she describes her beautifully extra beauty routine. I also like to round things out with body care in the form of either dry brushing + lotion or just a nice little hand massage with everyone’s favorite bougie hand cream. Pop on your aromatherapy diffuser and have sweet hydrated dreams!
My first attempt at a Chaotic Caption Edit, and where best to start that one of my favourite scenes of season one (this took me forever so pls give credit or else I’m coming for your kneecaps 🔨👀)
The Portrait Series: The Boy Beat
If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen that in the last few weeks my feed has been filled with makeup focused self-portraits. I started with one, and now it seems I just can’t stop doing them. I’ve always been more skincare than makeup focused, but it’s been so much fun to flex my creative muscles and work on something that feels like a real challenge. I am, I think, a total amateur when it comes to makeup. But I’ve been having such a good time and getting such lovely responses, that I’m just going to keep rolling with them. However! I did want to start doing somewhat longer breakdowns of my looks, because really an Instagram caption doesn’t feel like the right place to try to squeeze in the details. So here we go!
The Boy Beat is a look I first heard about through a Tamira Jarrel video where she explained the connection to Sir John (Beyoncé’s makeup artist) and executed it so flawlessly that it’s stuck in my head ever since. In my understanding, the essence of the look is fresh-faced, as little makeup as possible, and both embracing and enhancing flaws - plus a little contouring for a more boyish look. My take involved amping up the angles and freckles on my face, plus some solidly bushy brows. It’s simple, fun, and a great demonstration of how makeup can really be used precisely to alter your features.
I started out with a simple base combining Bobbi Brown Skin Long-Wear Weightless Foundation and a few drops of NIOD Photography Fluid Opacity 8%. This isn’t too opaque, so both my freckles and some flaws still show through and give the skin a very natural looking finish. I set that with the Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder and moved on to contouring with the Too Faced Cocoa Contour Palette. I find the chocolate smell of the contour palette a little disturbing, but it works great even though I’m not the most experienced with contouring techniques. I used the coolest tone to carve high, straight lines beneath my cheekbones, pull in my temples, and define my jawline, leaving a more angular and less soft look to my face. The same color went in the crease of my eyelids, on my lower lash line, and on the sides of my nose, to create consistent shadows. Brows were amped up with lots of Milk Makeup Kush Fiber Brow Gel, and lashes got the slightest bit of oomph from the Lune + Aster Formidable Mascara. Because they were a bit covered up by my base, I gave my own freckles a boost using a eye liner brush dampened with Urban Decay All Nighter Spray and dipped into a dark brown shadow from the Too Faced Just Peachy Mattes Palette. You could easily use a brow pencil or brown eyeliner for this! And last, I threw on a smidge of Glossier Generation G in Leo.
Overall, I love how this look turned out. It’s a bit of departure from my typical super-dewy baby-faced looks, but so fun to see how much I can change my face. What do you guys think of the boy beat?
