MASK-MAKING TIP ✂️ Sewing Through thick Folds: In these photos I am sewing the ties for my masks. The ends of these ties are one of a couple of places we are challenged to go through many folded layers. Starting your stitch run when you have a lot of thickness can be difficult. We tend to want to push the through. Knots form. Fabric doesn’t budge. Needles break. The needle is not breaking from the thickness of the fabric. It is more likely the needle breaks because it is hitting the presser foot or throat plate because we are shoving both the fabric and the needle. LOOK AT THE SECOND PIC: See how the presser foot is lowered and pointing upward? A wedge is created and it makes the fabric almost impossible to feed. This problem isn’t about fabric thickness it’s about leverage. Level out the rear of the presser foot to align with the thickness of the fabric and your feed dogs will feed these thick folds with ease. Remove your ‘jack’ after the first few stitches as you see your fabric feeding. Leftover paints, leftover glitters, leftover craft kit parts, sequins, beads, buttons. Glue for sparkles chalk for lettering guide.
