I just started Twin Peaks not long ago. Don’t know why I went so long without watching this show. It’s absolutely brilliant and hilarious! Special Agent Dale Cooper is my spirit animal.

Film Roundup 9/19/2015: Cooties, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Hellions

Cooties- What started out with the potential to be the most brilliantly irreverent horror comedy in years, the film lost a lot of steam throughout the second half. The first 30 minutes were filled with one hilarious joke after another where I found myself laughing so I hard I clapped twice. It felt like if David Wain directed a horror film. From there, the jokes are more scarce, and the tone and main characters become a bit of a mess. I applaud for having a clever twist on tired and overdone zombie subgenre, but that couldn't save the severe shifts that would happen from scene to scene among our protagonists. It picks itself back in up in the last 5 minutes to its starting glory only to end far too soon and with a 3rd iteration of a joke that should have just been used once. Part of me still couldn't help, but love it for some reason. Leigh Whannell (Saw, Insidious, Dead Silence, The Mule) is by far the best thing about the film. Every line he delivers is some of the most bonkers off-the-wall dialogue. The ending clearly left it open for a sequel which I'd love to see.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl- I geeked myself in hysterics over the course of the first half of this film. It was one of those films where the main character reminded me a great deal of myself. It featured so many references to many of my favorite arthouse and foreign classics and even used my favorite Lou Reed song. It easily won me over. It had such a great setup that featured some quirky dialogue (like many films of this breed from Fox Searchlight) and direction & cinematography that so well homaged those classic films. The 2nd half of the film went a little off into jumbled, lifeless and frustrating cliched territory, where every trope of your typical coming of age film is thrown out with a lack of pizazz. Thankfully, the ending of the film brought the heart back in to play and won me over again. It even called back the Lou Reed Street Hassle reference which was quite a surprise given how few people would get that. It starts with a beautiful moment that sets you up, only to crush you and break your heart. It destroyed me. I'll be honest, I cried pretty hard. It didn't help that one of the most emotional and underrated Explosions in the Sky songs is used in its entirety over the last five minutes as the ending seemingly, yet naturally frames itself around this song. "Remember Me as a Time of Day."

And last and sadly least, Hellions- As a fan of a fair deal of the prolific Bruce McDonald's work (Hard Core Logo, Pontypool), I'll be the first to agree that he has his duds (Hard Core Logo 2, Trigger), as well as his ambitious ones that could have worked, but fell short somewhere (from the mess of what could've been a solid narrative concert film This Movie is Broken, to what nearly was excellent, but still was fairly enjoyable The Tracy Fragments). Upon hearing about his new film Hellions, which is centered around a 17 year-old girl who finds out she is pregnant on Halloween and is proceed to be stalked by malicious trick or treaters that turn out to be something more sinister, I was quite curious. Here's another case where the first act of the film worked very well and I found myself to be quite engaged. From there the film plays out in a way that made it feel like The Wicker Man meets The Strangers and Rosemary's Baby of teen pregnancy movies. Sounds cool, right? Well, the execution is so pretentious and full of itself. For the most part, it tries to become a bit of an artsy horror film, but lacks any real gravitas in acting, editing, and keen direction to succeed. McDonald clearly wanted to make something that was different and yes, he succeeded. If only he'd more fully realized his direction and had more rewrites done on the script, it could have worked.
