One of my favorite gouache paintings I have made recently. I wanted to try and keep it loose while learning a new medium since I'm really only used to oils. One of my favorite paintings I've made lately. I think this must have been the first or second night out, and I remember stopping and just knowing I needed to paint this scene. The sad thing is that everyone was so nice there, no one wanted to get in the way of me taking a picture, and they would do their best walking around or out of frame. Bit of a story for this one: A little 16x20 of my favorite experience while in japan. We just got back from eating hamburger steak and saw a group of people making mochi traditionally. I was a bit worried about approaching them since it seemed like a very important event (there were a ton of salarymen there when we walked by earlier) and I didnt want to bother them, but when we asked if we could walk around they practically dragged us in. They seemed so excited that a couple of foreigners were interested in what they were doing and wanted to take pictures. I thought it was really cool when one of the guys turned to me and asked if I knew what they were doing, and they seemed pleased when I said they were making mochi. From what I could gather, it looked like the event was to show traditional japanese culture to a busy modern city, and the guys in charge were trying to make sure traditional japan didn't die out. Overall this was one of the best experiences I had, everyone was so friendly and inviting to us; they were really interested in where we came from and how we knew about mochi pounding. I have a massive stockpile of paintings I need to post since earlier this year, so I thought I should start off with a smaller one. This is based off a photo I took while we were at the tsukiji fish market in December. I definitely was not expecting how crowded this one little area was, it was literally shoulder to shoulder, no social distancing there. We were lucky to find a small strawberry mochi stand with little alleyway next to it. There's a ton more pictures but they're all stuck on my camera at the moment, so hopefully I will get them off soon! I met a very friendly and photogenic cat while wandering around #kamakura going around the shrines. Kamakura was my favorite place we stopped at, walking down the highway and just being in complete silence made the town so relaxing to travel around. The colors seemed to pop so much more too, making the shrines feel like a completely different world. Here is the completed commission! This painting was requested as a present for my client's wife as a memento of their trip to France. With his help I compiled some if the pictures they took on their trip to create a Monet influenced nature scene. My client asked for the focus to be on the reflections of the water and the lilies, and wanted a little part of them within the background on the bridge. This was a massive project to undertake (it was one of my biggest pieces I've done!) But it was fun to work on and a great experience overall. Arist shown here is Arata Kimura, I found a website about one of his exhibitions linked here: Merry Christmas to everyone! I wanted to post one of my favorite experiences while in Japan, we were walking around Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden when we found an artist set up along the path! This must have been the first time I saw someone painting outdoors and so i was not sure if he would want to be bothered by someone going up to him and taking pictures. I was so glad Hudson talked with him in Japanese and asked, and when Kimura thought I had only wanted a picture of his painting Hudson explained that I was an artist too and wanted one of him too! He was so kind and understanding, and I absolutely love his style of depicting the changing colors of the leaves. When we left Hudson said that was the best conversation he had in Japanese, and I'm sure it will be the highlight of this trip. We were also unsure of how to find him to look up more of his work, so he gave us the paper at the very end of the photo set.
